  • There's a freehub body, I think those are fixed?!

  • Recent build, frame bought from @woah. I was originally planning not to spend too much money but the Shamal came up on here for a price I just couldn't refuse, and it went from there...sure many of you will sympathise. Took a while to find a matching front that didn't break the bank.
Rides real nice but I am constantly scanning for potholes! Should probably swap out the wheels for something more sensible.

  • They're 16H Shamals, you should be fine. Unless you're a right fat git, but even then......

  • looks sexy.

What front rack you using? I want something similar for no eyelets forks.

Also, are those panaracers 32mm ?

  • Be interesting to know if it is. Although I've literally replaced mine a few weeks ago. The OG ball bearing number was dying. Replaced it with a lovely Cane Creek which is worth more than the rest of the bike combined. So nice though.

  • What front rack

Pelago by the looks of it.

@tallsam know the feeling. Ordered a bunch of stuff from cnc-bike just now and none of the items were cheaper than the frame :)

Got a tapered fork and a fsa HS with the 1 1/8" to 1.5" lower cup, we'll see.

  • Unless you're a right fat git

Unless you're two fat gits, really. Plenty of tandem crews have raced on 16-spoke Shamals.

  • 38c, mine has 32s , for now

  • Legit new shoes?

  • He works for Saddleback soooooo

  • .

  • Thanks! As has been said tyres are 38c paselas and the rack is a pelago commuter rack. Cheers

  • ahhhhhh, cheers fella :)

  • lots of placeholder parts + chain slack and crappy flat pedals but I wanted to see how it was built up now my wheels got here.

  • Walrus Ratfink - I bought a bike from a friend, he was leaving the country and it was a bit of a favour, and the bike was a little small. So, a transformation from a perfectly respectable commuter to a strange, fixed geared, disc-braked, wanna-be-tall-bike, rat-thing:

  • Recently inspired by @TomvanHalen and @t0-ster 's mtb creations. I've been eyeing the pile of mtbs abandoned by ex-residents at my place, and since I finished the last one, the tinkering part of my brain has been neglected. Anything I should be looking for other than the obvious? Trying to do this as close to free as possible. Planning to run it SS, assuming I'd just need spacers/tensioners for the rear? If I think I've found something suitable I'll move it to its own thread!

  • interesting, do you have a full size side shot? Also, those road rats are very very odd bikes.

  • Mash work with a sprinkle of 1x9.

  • Only one brake?

  • Nah, just waiting on parts, she be a work in progress.

  • Thats bonkers. What size has it gone from and to?

  • I don't, but will get one! It isn't quite right and too ponderous. I had a thing for big brown tyres (I think these are 38, but started with some silly, phenomenally heavy 45ish) which look right, but are so slow. I'll probably take it back to 28s and fettle down the mud-guards somewhat. ft it's going to be tall, upright and have a fairly short wheel-base, then it needs to be quick. Or... I swap the rear for a fat 650 to relax all the angles, put on swept bars, and turn it into a very strange cruiser of sorts.

  • What do we think of this so far?
What can I do to improve it?
Yes, I'm aware it's a non-drive side photo, the sun wasn't working with me today.
Also any tips for standing the bike up for photos other than using my lock?
