There's a cut off date (2003?), early HEDs used Shimano based hubs with a splined freehub to shell joint which take Fixxers, later ones have HED designed hubs which don't. Not sure what happened at the crossover from Specialized to HED, so maybe some late Specialized ones had the Fixxer compatible hub or maybe some early HEDs had the 6200 based hub with the threaded-in freehub which is not compatible with any OTP conversion. It's pretty obvious what is what once you have the wheel in your hands and take the freehub off.

Got this almost for free, plan is rigid fork, guards and rack for winter commuting. Budget parts bin build. Fairly sure the included headset is fucked, frame has a 44 mm id headtube. Does that mean I could get either tapered or straight forks? Time to get with the latest headset jive again. I hate changing standards.

Yes, the 44mm headtube is the do it all of headtubes. Depending on the bearings you put in, you can do any size of straight or tapered forks/steerertubes.

Casati 53x11 a recent ebay purchase. Not many bits for it yet, but full campag Chorus/Record + donate Easton Ea90SLX wheels from another bike I think.

Now, 68mm bb shell with a tiagra ht2 bb in it and XT FC-m780 cranks don't seem like a feasible combination. Any suggestions? Do I need different cranks? Have a few bb spacers to try out.

You need to use an MTB BB with spacers to bring it out to 73mm.

Thanks, got a few of those so will try it out. Now, wtf is up with this derailleur and how do I fit it to a normal rd mount?

Haha, don't worry. This non-90s mtb shizzle is weird to me. Steep learning curve though. I expect that extra hinge-y bit on the RD is to accommodate larger cassettes or something.

I've got an Avalanche but an earlier model (slightly different to yours anyway).

Pretty sure mine won't take tapered steerer. Unless you can fit an external bearing at the bottom? and have Integrated at the top.

Quite possibly different headtubes on our frames though.

Both top & bottom are 44 mm id which would suggest I could use an external cup at the bottom to accommodate a tapered steerer and use an internal cup at the top. If I've understood things correctly that is! Will get a cheap headset anyway to begin with, have found alternatives to cane creek/ Chris king.

first I'd mark the bottom if it with a sharpie and keep an eye on it for a month or so... I had larger cracks on my Alan (same place), and on a Peugeot Comete (seatstays) that didn't change over the few years I rode the bikes... drilling them is probably safer...
