Because I keep stripping wheels. If I am going to use a wheel with a traditional threaded hub, it would probably be better for my wheel that my chainring is on the left. I must put in more power skidding, than in pedalling forward, so it makes sense that my skids should tighten the cog, and my pedalling loosen it, and not the other way around.
Yes, it's only like that on the right hand side. I wish it were on both sides, though, because I wanted to fit my drive-side crank on the left. Sad times :(
