    Spot on, mainly cause one of the advantage of a curved fork is to reduced vibration, pointless when you need the fork to be stiff enough for the pull of the disc brake.

  • As in all curved disc forks are bad? Surely not? Would surly make them?

    TBF they did go straight fork in their MTB range, however I can see why they don't put curved fork on their road/tour bike as it would make it look less like a Surly and more All-City.

  • Yeah, but don't the surly disc forks weigh about a ton? Which suggests they've been made stiff enough that they probably don't provide all that much damping anyhow.

    But then the advantage of disks is the ability to run huge volume tyres, so I suppose it's swings and roundabouts.

  • Any advice on a new commuter for a very specific circumstance?

    Currently doing 12.5 miles into Kings X on my Croix De Fer with a rack bag and two panniers. Secure parking at the other end. Been the perfect set up for me.

    Change in job means new place has somewhere for me to keep the bike, but it's indoors but it's up 5 flights of stairs. Not viable with the current set up.

    Thinking Whyte Wessex? and a saddle pack.

    Don't really fancy that distance on a Brompton.

  • Bit much to change bike, maybe try and removed all panniers and go for a carradice saddlebag instead on the CdF?

    If you locked outside before, why not again?

  • I know, just worried about getting it nicked.

    Current employers have 24 hour security so parking the bike has never been an issue in the last 7 years

  • They're heavy but don't ride heavy, I replaced the carbon forks on my CDF with a pair of Straggler forks and at last can ride the bike with confidence. They do have fore and aft flex but I would take that over super stiff any day.

  • I had a Straggler and I really didn't like the flex in the front end when I was braking hard. It probably doesn't help the actual braking either. Curved blades bring comfort but it's too much of a compromise when discs are involved IMHO.

  • Strange, you'd expect the fork to not flex at all since the forces on the caliper are opposite to the direction of "rough road forces"

  • The fork does flex under braking, but I'm a big lad. Can still #endo4dayz though. p

  • @Heldring you can see the fork move, and I'm not a big lad...

  • that would kinda mean a bent fork works with disc brakes..

  • Will shortly be looking to move this on as a rolling chassis if anyone is interested. 2016 Pinnacle Arkose 4, full carbon tapered bolt through fork, SuperStar 11spd centrelock hubs to WTB i23.
