  • I know they can be annoying - I'm more asking if there's any serious downside. I've been talked out of riding tubs in the past, but they can't be that bad, can they? (Famous last words, I know)

  • Okay, crank options are Sug75s, Rotors, and SRAM Omnomnoms, courtesy of @c4shr. He also may sell me some Thomson bits (stem, post, carbon bars). At this rate, everything other than the saddle will come from that dude. He is the plug for this build, clearly.

  • Which bars and stem length/angle/width/reach would you need?

  • If I were using risers, 100/110mm, 0-10 degree stem, and 650-700mm bars. As for bullhorns, I'm not sure exactly, but I was previously running some 42cm Deda Chrononeros with a 100mm stem

  • I have a 100mm/6degree service course sl stem and seatpost if you wanted. Both beyond black for extra HHSB points

  • Surely it takes the fun out of this type of bike if you can't skid without worrying? I would go for a clincher rear wheel. Maybe phil wood or paul hub?

  • I assume the dent on the chainstay is for the chainring?

  • Yes, it's only like that on the right hand side. I wish it were on both sides, though, because I wanted to fit my drive-side crank on the left. Sad times :(

  • Because I keep stripping wheels. If I am going to use a wheel with a traditional threaded hub, it would probably be better for my wheel that my chainring is on the left. I must put in more power skidding, than in pedalling forward, so it makes sense that my skids should tighten the cog, and my pedalling loosen it, and not the other way around.

  • Mostly been fine with tubs, always just try not to skid them as much, probably shouldn't whip skid. I think my main issue with tubs is just the absolute ball ache of changing the tyre when you fuck it up. Did this a week ago and now I'm a wheel down because tubs are a pain in the arse to change, very time consuming. Takes a couple of days of prep.

  • I'm told by most people that tubs aren't too much hassle to change. My logic is as follows - a tub with some Stan's NoTubes will give me far fewer punctures than my current Clincher setup. Also, when I skid through tyres, it's not a problem. I skid through tyres eventually, anyway, whether they are clincher or tubular. I'd have been putting money down for a new clincher tyre too - it's not just tubs that I can skid through, and will have to replace

    The only issue is learning to change one out on the fly.

  • Stan's? Are you sure you're talking about tubeless and not tubs?

  • Nope. You can use Stan's in tubs and it's perfectly fine. Works for Clinchers, too!

  • You'd also be slowly unthreading your pedals running cranks LHD

  • Shit. Didn't think about that. Does that really happen, in practice? I would have thought that it would take some pretty good pedalling force to undo a pair of pedals that were on tight. Correct me if I'm wrong, however - I just thought it wouldn't be an issue.

  • Bolt-on cogs are the solution for everything

  • You're very right, but a lot of the wheels that I want to buy won't support bolt on. (Tri-spokes, 4 spokes, discs, etc). I'll put a bolt on cog on my beater, if I don't just make it Single Speed, but I don't think a bolt on will be the one for this build. You're absolutely free to challenge that, however.

  • The turning force is only that of the friction in the bearings. In practise I doubt it. Over time though, maybe they'd loosen. Who knows. There's a reason why left and right pedals thread differently though

  • To be fair, I am no mechanic, and am always open to criticism and correction, but I think that, practically, there would be very little repercussion (pedal-wise) of me using left-side drive

  • Right, you meant the sealant, not the rims.
    Skidding doesn't really cause more punctures (as generally intended) but given that most tubulars are lightweight and super-thin, you will need change tyre every other week if you plan to skid on them.

  • Really for me it is just the time it takes to replace a tyre. 5 mins for a clincher, a few days for a tub.

    What hubs are you stripping? Maybe an issue with how you are fitting them?

  • That's why tandem cranksets have inverted threads!
    Get a tandem specific crankset if you really want to go in that direction!
