On a factory reset MBP, I imported Applications and Computer settings from Time Machine. Adobe CS4 is giving an error which looks like it needs full reinstall and activation, but more surprised that Office for Mac needs the product key re-entering. The Library was imported too. Anyone done this successfully?
After the initial import, but before opening anything I made a new admin user. Tried opening applications from the imported user, but wondering whether that would have made a difference - worth resetting and trying again?

Great success! Thanks.

Gah, it's back, I can't drag it off the top bar. How else can one get rid of things?

bartender is a great app for sticking annoying system icons you might need out of the way under a single Icon.

I don't need this, I just want to delete it but can't see how to.

you'll have to delete or uninstall the Printer Installer Client. Use spotlight to search for it.

Hmm. I deleted it already- do I need to re-download it, uninstall, then delete?

There's no uninstaller or app left on the system? Curious.
In the System Prefs, does it appear there?Otherwise go to System prefs/Users & Groups, select current user and check the login items. Maybe it's embedded itself there.

Found it, but no uninstaller - can I just delete all the files?
-
• #11590
The answer is no. Delete files, restart, the fucking icon pops up again as applications launch.
Am I going to have to go to the Mac Store to get this fucker off my computer?

I thought I would go back to the reset state and start again, clean, no imports.
Thought Internet recovery would be relatively simple - but can't get onto wifi connection because it only shows network name and password - I need to enter a username and password. Is there any way around this? Except find a friendly cafe. -
• #11593
Haven't you bought my monitor yet?

• #11594
Got my internet recovery done in a friendly cafe. Now it won't let me upgrade to ElCapitan because I'm different user maybe (was El Capitan before but has gone back to Mavericks). Not sure. Anyway, Apps store says skip straight to Sierra. Is Sierra cool?
(Why these funny names? I kinda got the mountain lion to snow leopard progression)

Places in California. Sierra being the latest.
Sounds like you're having a really shit time! Hope it's all running smoothly soon.

Ah, like mountains and that. Makes sense. No, not really a shit time, it's all fine. Gave me an excuse to have a nice dinner and a chat. Sierra better than Mavericks then? I'm naturally wary of latest things.

It's been around for a while so you should be OK - they announced 'High Sierra' not so long ago -not sure when it's due.
I'm always one for starting from fresh installs rather than backups. Helps refine what I actually need. All my project files and documents are in Google Drive anyway so it's just some apps and I prefer to install them as I need them where possible as I'm forever trialling new bits of software that I quickly forget about (Sketch comes to mind) and never uninstall. If I were to backup it'd take forever and mostly be a waste of time.

On another note, does anyone know if I can associate .doc/x files with Google Docs so a double click on the desktop opens it in that app? Rather than trying to open it in Pages or some BS. Think it used to be possible with the Chrome extension/offline function but not sure that's still available. Anyone come across a workaround in script editor or something that doesn't involve me installing some dodgy third party app?

Yeah. I've always inherited my dad's old machines with everything on, this is the first time I'm starting fresh. I'm going from 500GB to 125 and i realised i couldn't take all the data, and since the apps don't transfer cleanly there seemed to be no reason not to start clean.
All my old stuff's backed up onto external drives and new stuff's on dropbox. I've been working in a kind of peripatetic way (different machines and locations) for a couple of years so this new lightweight mode of macbooking should suit, even though it feels weird not to have loads of data right there.
