Range is a beast on a bike without a revolutionary development in battery technology. Electric scooters for the city would seem to have a bright future but anything requiring range or performance is going to have a problem with the size and weight of the battery required. Honda (via their partner Mugen) have been sinking plenty into high performance electric bikes with their e-racing project. They hold the electric lap record at the TT (been racing there since 2012) at 119mph. The problem is, that's still only good for one 37 mile lap and it weighs a whopping 248kg.
Yeah that's kind of what I mean. Sony released the first Lithium-Ion battery back in the early 90s. It's been refined a bit since then for sure but no quantum shifts in technology.
