Better power management
Private content blockers
Same browser engine across all your devices (if you use iOS)
Best OS integration
Picture-in-Picture video
Best privacy features (plugin management, notification/location management etc.)And I never find the performance to be poor, and certainly better than Chrome/FF/Opera.

Same. Plus Keychain.
Also, on a different note... hello GAMING...

What are you playing? Windows or osx gaming?
-
• #11557
Why tho?
The external GPU doesn't affect the internal screen...

Just get an actual computer mate.

LOLLLLZERSSSS...
@Well_is_it totally does! On windows and macOS (not my macOS set up though). 580's will work in macOS with newer enclosures and both work in Bootcamp. Next purchase - LG Ultrafine.
@kboy you shouldn't have to ask... but... thats DayZ, was getting 60fps on decent settings. This set up is a bit MVP - I didn't want to spend loads to start with but now I know how it all works will prob replace with a more powerful card and enclosure.
@CYOA your such a noobedit: coupe of pics in this link of settings... http://imgur.com/a/ZzHxv

I am slowing warming up (to the idea). (I'm not really. Get a real computer).

Just got a new-to-me 2014 MBP :)
I have old stuff all Time Machined (machine kept blackscreening, otherwise fine) - should I import everything from Time Machine? I've never done it, will it install apps and stuff and will I need license codes etc. Or should I start over? -
• #11562
How many new-to-you machines are you buying?!? Fancy taking my monitor now? I'm dying to get one of those 5K LG displays and only use USB-C.

• #11563
for you I think it would be perfect... grab a laptop then have a RX 580 in an eGPU kit in 10.13 for office use when you need to render those lens flares and stuff you video guys do...

deets on this setup please.

Top end 13inch 2017 MBP, with extra gubbins (RAM, processor), Akitio Thunder 3 with GTX 1050. Plug and play in windows. Card needs to be specific type as only gets power from PCIE slot. Performance loss is approx 5-10% vs desktop, I think. Runs things a bit better than my Maxed out 2013 iMac. Anything else?

this guy + this guy? Will they play ball with my bootcamped late 2012 retina? I can't bring myself to build a tower solely for gaming, but there are many polygons I wish to push.
e: I'm guessing my stuck-in-the-past machine doesn't have thunderbolt 3, so I'm stuck playing boring old games. either that or time to bring out the money cannon.
-
• #11567
Wait, so that drives the 13" screen? I really thought eGPU was for external monitors only...
-
• #11568
Almost.... the cpu is just a 1050 not a Ti and the single fan version as thats the only one that fits. Check out https://egpu.io and have a hunt for your exact model
To be honest, cost wise it isn't much less than a cheap gaming tower. But if you wanted to you could get the Thunder2 and a 1050 or 1050ti. There is more of a performance loss with more Thunderbolt 1 and 2 so not sure if it would be worth it...

this is worse than me trying to avoid disc brakes
-
• #11570
Did you need any license keys? Adobe CS and Microsoft Office are my necessary programmes...
-
• #11571
Yep, internal screen! I think pre 10.13 it was external only, Windows does both, 10.13 does both, brave new world!
-
• #11572
Ta, I'll give it a shot

I have an annoying icon that I don't know how to get rid of - it has cropped up after I used a work printer adding service. How do I make gone? It's the picture of a printer with a plus on it.
