My LBS have an affiliated club. I have joined the club and never even been to the shop.
Why did I join? They organise rides a few times a week. They put on events, are helping out with the TOB. After a couple of rides I have made a few friends. There is a great wealth of knowledge within the club, they know great places to go riding and where the good cake shops are.
Discount at the shop and occasional offers on other things were not motivators for me.
I enjoy the diversity of people in the club, a musical instrument repairer, dental technician, police officer involved in the Grenfell inquiry etc etc, Members age ranges from teens to seventies...
The idea of riding with just recent converts to cycling from one industry sounds terrible to me.
