  • Two sides to everything. Had followed this thread with some interest over the last few months and then saw that @DWatkinsLDN had got involved, so didn't want him to have all the fun!

  • There's an interesting parallel with Sebastian Gorka here I think.

He wanted, desperately, to be part of the military intelligence community - he was in the Territorial Army as translator, which he then Walter Mitty'd into some sort of "Senior Intelligence Analyst in the Balkan Theatre" entry on his CV.

He tried to join the Hungarian intelligence service and was rebuffed because what he wanted, more than anything, was the job on his CV, whereas what they needed was someone who wanted to strive to make Hungary safer, and the role (any role) was secondary to that.

It's why he fits in so well with the Trump Whitehouse- it's all show, with no idea of what is actually required, no idea of the quid pro quo if you will. No authenticity, ultimately.

A cycling club is normally about cycling -getting more people cycling, enabling those who wish to develop to so do, making it safer, more fun, etc etc. Brixton does this well - in a somewhat disorganised way.

EC1 is about the look, the likes, the kit, the bantz. That's fine, it is what it is - the reason you're drawing fire here is by pretending that it's about cycling, when that's clearly incidental.

Try this simple exercise: replace all the pictures of bikes with a bag of golf clubs on the EC1 site - does that make any difference? Does the site now make more or less sense?

Now try that with a cycling club. Spot the difference.

You could, therefore, actually treat this as a win - you're a members only mens club, bring in other interests that your members share such as golf, football, etc, it won't dilute your brand and will make you more strongly aligned with your members.

  • Waiting for Sean Sako to join thread yo!

  • I see your point, but it is all about cycling. I wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't a cycling club - there are enough 'networking media wank' drinks/event to go to if your sole aim is collecting business cards.

Your example about golf doesn't work as there are plenty of traditional golf clubs and also industry specific ones http://www.financialadvertisinggolfsociety.co.uk/ https://www.mediasportsgroup.com/

I love cycling and wanted to try and mix work and leisure, and as said before we aren't trying to be a BCC.

  • No, as mentioned upthread I work for a charity. Does your ad agency know you've been on this thread all morning?

If you weren't trying to say some version of 'you non-exclusive (read: plebby) types need us corporate types and our money or there'd be no sport for you to enjoy' with your comment then what were you trying to say? It's either disingenuous or just meaningless.

Still fair play for engaging here. You've been much better behaved here than when I asked you to stop infecting my FB feed...

  • how often / when last did you say "we work hard, but we also play hard"?

  • Out of interest, what (if any) are the Grupetto/Thundercat membership fees?

  • why not register on BC?

  • Thundercats, none. We're mates that ride bikes, made a team so we can race under the same name.

  • Why would you want to have work in common when you go cycling? Isn't avoiding talking about work part of the whole reason to go cycling with others......

Anything that involves people going cycling has got to be a good thing....I think the 'exclusivity' especially based on profession is a bit offensive though.

  • Try this simple exercise: replace all the pictures of bikes with a bag of golf clubs on the EC1 site - does that make any difference? Does the site now make more or less sense?

Less because all the text is still about bikes.

  • You didn't really ask, you called us a bunch of cunts that should go back to the golf course and other such nicesties. So you weren't really very well behaved yourself. I responded in a mocking/patronising tone, but wasn't outright insulting to you.

I also wasn't trying to make the point you say above. Just saying that corporate money if one part of sport.

Also, I think if most employers monitored employees internet usage whilst at work, there would be a fair few slapped wrists.

  • Never. Surprisingly!

  • in a somewhat disorganised way

You absolute bastard, its actually a deliberate ploy to make you think that its disorganised, while actually its all carefully choreographed.

  • Because you then have to open it up to everybody and at the moment we aren't looking to do that - as discussed a lot during this thread!

  • Club subs are paid annually but this is the case with most cycling clubs.

  • Sorry you find it offensive. That's genuinely not the aim. Feel I've explain a lot in previous comments as to why we are doing what we are at EC1

  • A group of colleagues who claim to work hard and play hard do not appear to do either, it has emerged.

  • This thread is a bit dull

  • Sorry, what isn't?

  • Yeah sorry, I did mean subs. Just trying to gauge a balanced sense of what is "too much" if we're saying £75 is a lot.

  • It is not true that being a BC affiliated club means your membership has to be open to all.

  • Thought it was. My mistake. May well look into that then.

  • Can't wait to line up next to EC1 and RCC at some races.
