You can buy more expensive cables. It's cheaper than trying to bring cheap ones up to the same standard, thanks to the wonder of division of labour

Do people lube/grease their gear/brake cables prior to installation? I know some come pre-coated but I'm trying to see what I can do to get better performance from more budget cables. Had seen it mentioned a few places but can't find a really concise explanation!
