if that clip is all there is to go on, I'm struggling to see what the officer did wrong. It's tragic it ended in a death but I didn't see an obvious use of excessive force or violence

^^ Epic WTF .. now removed from the site.
How can editors in this day and age let stuff like '[insert race] are not generally noted for...' slide?

Frank Fitzgibbon, editor of the Sunday Times in Ireland, said: “On behalf of the Sunday Times I apologise unreservedly for the offence caused by comments in a column written by Kevin Myers and published today in the Ireland edition of the Sunday Times. It contained views that have caused considerable distress and upset to a number of people. As the editor of the Ireland edition I take full responsibility for this error of judgment. This newspaper abhors antisemitism and did not intend to cause offence to Jewish people.”

Christ. I assumed it was a letter, not a column.

In 2009, same author wrote an article for Irish Independent denying the Holocaust. That seems like it would have been the end of him.

Strong career move. Anti-Semitism is so hot right now. He'll probably end up working in the White House.

II have deleted the article, but Belfast Telegraph haven't:

hopefully this results in a significant drop in advertising revenue for the times. tho he's been given a platform for his shit-spout opinions for ages, so probably not.

He's got something of an obsession is t would appear.

he wouldn't write it if he knew the paper wouldn't print it, and the paper wouldn't print it if they thought his opinions wouldn't resonate with their readers.
"he's just saying what everyone's thinking" is probably true in the case of times/telegraph readers.

I am a little bit troubled by all this, and where things are going.
I first became aware of it earlier, I think on The Guardian website, where they basically said the article has been deleted because it expressed anti-semitic views.
Whilst I abhor anti-semitism, and just about all other sorts of prejudice, I'd like to make my own fucking mind up. I would like there to be an open and rational exchange of ideas and views, however horrid some of those views may be.
I believe with coming of the 'information age' ironically ideas are much more carefully monitored than they used to be - there seems to me to be less, not more, freedom of thought. Recent cases where both Germain Greer and Richard Dawkins have been 'no platformed' really, really worry me.
I am not saying that Kevin Myers is anything but a total cunt - just that it is better that he be engaged in some way, rather than deleted. The Bruce Springsteen thing is just fucking weird.
-

There is no "rational exchange of ideas" here. Printing antisemitic trash in a major newspaper gives legitimacy to antisemitism and leads to people's lives being damaged or destroyed.
-
• #46870
I think you just made my point.
-
• #46871
yeah, there aren't any anti semitic hot takes that are worth anyones consideration. fuck him and his opinions, no platform fascists all day long, their end game is the industrialised slaughter of people that aren't like them.
-
• #46872
What is your point? Nothing is stopping you from googling David Irving and filling your boots.
-
• #46873
I thought I had made my point.
There is much less debate these days in the public domain. There seems to be a very narrow, dogmatic agenda, which I believe to be dangerous.
I stated fundamentally in my first post that I abhor anti-semitism, and then get accused of being a fascist and an anti-semite just because I want to rationalise for myself what someone has said.
That sort of response, when I was young, was described as Stalinist. Just sayin'.
-
• #46874
Who called you an anti-Semite or fascist?
Your point remains unclear. Debates fine. Should newspapers be forced to print antisemitic articles to allow for it?
-
• #46875
pretty sure no one has accused you of being an anti semite. please point us towards any posts that have.
what sort of debate are you suggesting we have wth fascists that doesn't end with "fuck off, you nazi cunt"?
Man died, something didn't go right, police ain't meant to kill people, not even a little bit
