  • Awesome, thanks @danb and @dangeek and any other dans.

The photos on the landing page of the exploding bakery make me lol and basically make me want to move to Exeter - which, having been to Exeter (admittedly not for over a decade), surprises no one more than me.

Sweet deal on Gumtree for a Gaggia Baby + Grinder + Accessories at £100#

EDIT: it might be @Colm89 from here and might be my old Gaggia!

  • Just looking at Crankhouse - did I miss something? Did Exeter get cool all of a sudden? I remember a BHS, lots of concrete and some bits of pastie getting fought over by seagulls.

  • Ha yeah. Exeter is pretty cool, there's a good independent scene for coffee and food.
    Great cycling around here too.
BHS has gone but the seagulls will still try to steal your pasty if you're not careful.

  • This place is new, I haven't been there yet. It's supposed to be good. They make their own doughnuts.

  • Lol not me but that's some serious coincidence!

  • In Norwich we have three pretty top-drawer coffee shops (plus a few others), my favourite of which is run by forumenger @12ounce. Another, Strangers, is roasting some of the nicer filters I've had so far. So it's at least as good as Brighton here, if not better, I reckon. Worth a visit,

  • Origin Coffee are based south west too. Portleven?

  • I've never had a good coffee in honiton. Just have ice cream instead.

  • Ancoats, Heart & Graft, and Passion Fruit all in Manchester.

  • BTP was better than Sidmouth. There's a coffee#1 here too but didn't try there. Rainy day so passed on icecream, maybe tomorrow.

Anyone got the lowdown on Weymouth coffee scene? Google gives me coffee#1 or a place called Stanleys?

  • Falmouth/Penryn had some decent coffee places when I lived there; given how things were moving when I left (nearly five years ago now!), I can't imagine there are significantly fewer. I think there may have been a roaster on the Penryn industrial estate somewhere? I recall Truro had a couple of OK coffee places, and I'm sure Penzance and St Ives must have them as well; heck, even Redruth has a couple of independent cafes, though I couldn't tell you what their coffee was like.

Cornwall's a beautiful part of the world, and I miss the beaches and countryside dearly, but it's a bloody long way away from anywhere, especially if you're out of one of the towns, and doubly so if you're car-free. Not exactly a cheap county to live in either.

  • Good spot - I've upped the roast just a smidge, the coffee is developing more complexity in the base tones as the green beans settle. Glad you're enjoying it :)

  • Got some family near Redruth and I figure a flight to City Airport from Newquay costs the same as the train and takes an hour :/ we have a car and are actively looking not to be in a town any more. Grew up on a pretty remote farm so used to not hearing traffic/neighbours children arguing with their parents and throwing bricks through their windows and attacking them with planks of wood which is what we're enduring now :)

Never had a nice cup of coffee in Redruth though! Been looking at Falmouth and Penryn actually so shall give it some thought.

  • There was a artists/makers workshop place in 'Druth that I'm fairly sure had a cafe attached?

I really like Penryn/Falmouth; Penryn especially got a big boost when the Penryn university campus opened, but from what I've heard from people that are still there the uncertain funding environment (thanks, Brexit!) and UCF management mean nobody's quite sure what the future holds - lots of the locals wouldn't be unduly distressed to see fewer students but they're a big part of what makes Falmouth so vibrant IMO. If we could afford it and find jobs I'd definitely be up for a move back...

  • The "pink beans" are the favourite in our house.

  • My parents live in Norwich and can definitely vouch for Strangers, great coffee shop and roasters.

  • Holy Kenyan Batman this shit is good. And pricey. But worth every penny IMO.

  • Another thumbs up for @StevePeel and his wonderful espresso blend. Sticker now sitting proud on the grinder. Thanks Steve!
