Semi-seriously; its essentially culture vs sub-culture.
Cycling as a culture is big and there is space for everyone.
Within that the sub cultures will always have friction with each other.
The audaxers will hate the sportive crowd and we all hate triathletes.EC1 arent doing anything substantially wrong and more people on bikes is a good thing.
My only personal gripe is the seeping of lad culture into cycling which I think harms the open-ness of it. And its just dull.
If you use the gentrification metaphor, EC1 are the £3 Flat white millennials and Cade is Foxtons.

I find the whole 'EPICness', 'RIDEHARD', 'hitters', 'WattageCottage', etc to be the worst thing that's happened to cycling in forever.

Why don't we start a real lads cycling group? It'll be a mixture of Love Island and Paris Roubaix.

Is this a spoof of the way all cyclists manage to find some way of looking down on another group of cyclists? It's the snobbiest thing I've read for a while - and I don't even own an Audi.

Great article that adds a little perspective to life. Comments are a little Daily Mail
The cycling lexicon seems to have become infected with the canker of suffering. It’s almost become a religion to some. Ex Duris Gloria steers a little too close to Arbeit Macht Frei for comfort, and also too close to Godwin's Law to continue this analogy. We pedal the local loop and the globe in search of self-inflicted anguish, or just stay at home in the garage, sorry, Pain Cave, and inhale it through TV screens and displays on the bars, and then download it to other screens so everyone can see our sufferface. Look at me, sweaty, look how I have Put Myself Through It.

It's Jo Burt, everything comes with a healthy dose of cynicism.

Hence why I'm selling my road bike, I cannot be bothered to be round these people. I'm much more happy tootling though the forest undisturbed.

I don't see the cynicism. I read it as "I do really long rides, often over multiple days. Indeed I am shortly about to do an really really long one, and it will be difficult and could even be dangerous. However, don't make the mistake that I am taking it seriously. Appearing to take it seriously is for other people. People whose bike was probably the same cost as mine, but off the peg. People who can pronounce sportive without sneering. I only take war, cancer and famine seriously. And Morissey".
