  • Not sure if the OKR one does anything other than chrome.
But I've just spoken to my anodiser who was in Ilderton Road (25 years ago!), he no longer does it in-house. The firm in Mitcham does it for him.

ETA - I've never been in any workplace where such a high percentage of the work force have some sort of work related disability or disfigurement.

  • I'll use mitcham then..
    I'll watch that video later...

  • ^^ Mr Cumberbatch has found a few new wrinkles.

  • Had to look it up, but the similarity disturbs.

  • Is there a headset thread? I've an integrated tapered (1 1/8 to 1 1/5") headset that needs replaced - are they all the same in terms of bearing size?

  • SHIS covers all the variables and makes pinning down what you have (and therefore finding a replacement) easier.

  • Where should a man shop for a plain bidon?

    Black probably.

    Or another colour.

  • Does anyone live in Coventry? If so would you be coming to London soon and willing to bring a bike for me with them? The return ticket price for me doesn't really make it worth my while.

  • I'm going from Birmingham to London in a couple of weeks. Doubt that's of any help to you

  • there should be a part number on each of the cartridges, google it and buy from https://simplybearings.co.uk/

  • They've had a hard life, so I can't read any part numbers, sadly.

    But thanks!

  • are they all the same in terms of bearing size?

No, you need to measure the OD, thickness and both chamfer angles. The 1.5" lowers don't vary much, but there are loads of possible 1.125" uppers and only one of them is the right one. Once you have the dimensions, go to the TH Industries web site to get the part numbers and google those to find suppliers.

  • Is it the original headset? What bike is it?

  • Not unless you want to hop off and hop on again. Thank you for offering, i don't want to inconvenience anyone.

  • A friend of mine is showing a bit of interest in bikes recently and wants to make his dad's bike fresh again.
As the bb is really old and loose, I recommended him to buy a new one but don't know which.
It seems to be the non-fluted Super Record on a Basso frame, so ITA JIS 112mm should do the job. But which bb to use? I'm pretty sure the bike would be porn material if restored properly (the last time I saw it was in high school about 6 years ago though) so I don't want him to use this ugly ass bb: https://www.bike-components.de/de/Campagnolo/Centaur-Innenlager-Vierkant-p10016/

  • Campagnolo will be ISO and not JIS,

Campagnolo cranks don't go all the way down on JIS axles but will fit, chainline might be a tad off.

  • I meant ISO of course ;)

Use the modern cartridge BB which is easy to fit and works well, because only a twat would comment on it outside of a museum. In a museum setting, Super Record should probably have the Ti axle and steel lined aluminium cups, but they won't have suddenly got better for being 30 years old and a NOS one would set you back more than the whole bike is worth.

The FAG-built AC-S has better visuals if you want to let aesthetics rule over function, and still works fine.

  • Thanks. The bb doesn't have to be period correct but the Centaur looks really off in my eyes. Even if you don't see it.
Just have to find a German shop which lists the AC-S.

One more question: did Basso mix Shimano and Campagnolo? Mentioned friend sent me some shots of the bike and it has full 105 except for the crankset.

  • Even if you don't see it.

The more important thing is that nobody will see it

One more question: did Basso mix Shimano and Campagnolo?

I doubt that they would have done on OTP bikes, but it was not uncommon on bikes which were user-built from the frame up, or had upgrades. If it had full Super Record from new, it would make sense as a rider to get the 1050 shifters and brakes as both were better than 20th Century Super Record :)

  • it would make sense as a rider to get the 1050 shifters and brakes

Wow, thought 1050 was a typo, but you were right. Just checked velobase. But was 1050 so much superior to the Super record assuming it was originally installed? 1050 also was 20th century, 80s even.

  • was 1050 so much superior to the Super record

Yes, night and day. Pre-Synchro Campag was shit for changing gear, 1050 actually had indexing which worked well. In fact, even the Suntour VX was a vastly superior rear dérailleur to pre-Synchro Campag, and SIS (IIRC, 1050 was the first 105 generation with SIS) stole the good Suntour geometry and added indexing which was another great leap forward.

My comment about 20th Century was just to eliminate the latest re-use of the Super Record brand by Campag.

  • Thanks for the info. I can't believe 105 was way better than the top of the line Super Record.

  • I guess SR might have been mechanically nicer, but the step change from friction shifting to indexed makes that (mostly) moot
