If you drop the size of ring on a 1x9 is there an easy rule for how many links take off for how many teeth less? There must be but I've got baby brain and can't work it out

Each tooth you ditch from the chainring is half a link less chain you will need (everything else being equal and assuming you're only dropping a few teeth).
