I think Movistar's goal was for him to win the Giro, then he could go to the Tour with the pressure off. Dumoulin put a spanner in the works of that one though.
They also had the Valverde card to play too, so if Quintana was cooked, he could support Valverde. Unfortunately that plan lasted less than 11 kms.
