Gold standard in pedal bearings

Posted on
  • Hi All

Which brand / manufacturer produce the absolute top end sealed pedal bearings? I would also prefer to source from UK manufacturer.

I am not looking to set a new hour record but rather to fit a great bearing, low maintenance and pretty much bomb proof and good for years to come.

    Thanks

    Arb

  • Royce are finest products made in UK. But not sure if the actual bearings are u made.

  • They look very interesting. Any suggestions with Steel?

    cheers

  • You wanted the gold standard and I have delivered platinum. Some people are hard to please.

  • James - they look awesome - but also a little pricey. Always good to have options ;). Your advice much appreciated. Cheers

  • the absolute top end sealed pedal bearings

    a little pricey

  • Maybe silver standard.

  • Ntn
    Hard to get.
    Royce uses the same.

    TPI
    Used in dt swiss hubs
    Also hard to get

Any big brand name with the best sealing and premium waterproof grease fill. Like Mobil hxp222 grease.

  • Why is this even a thing?

  • Probably as sensible as a Chris King headset on a Create or other similar pointless upgrade.

  • I hand polish bearings from an FSA The Pig O/S headset down to the correct size.

  • MKS Rx1 has the best bearings.

Top-end and sealed don't combine. Which bearings fit your pedal depends, of course, on the pedal model. Since I assume you have cartridge bearings I'll talk about them-- with cup and cone you just purchase good quality balls from the same lot. Highest performance are typically shielded-- or even fully unsealed. The "Gold Standard" are high grade ceramics-- cheap, inexpensive ceramic cartridges tend to be inferior to similarly priced steel bearings-- but they are also quite expensive and not really of use beyond placebo. Speedplay uses 686 (13x6x5mm) outer and 137 inner (13x7x4mm). These are industrial products and best purchased from an industrial bearing supply-- where the bicycle companies also source them. SKF (Swedish) and EZO (Japanese) are quite well known and established makers but there are a number of other suppliers such as Schaeffler Group (FAG and INA) in Germany that also produce extremely high quality and well regarded bearings.
