You don't hear of more breakages with plastic bags vs hard cases, cardboard boxes, etc. I've sent my steel tourer in a plastic bag dozens of times (well maybe 1-1.5 dozen) but I'm always a bit wary with bikes with carbon forks - I try to wrap them in some pipe insulating foam or cardboard (like it would help if they were really bashed, but I feel better about it).
Fork damage is what I am wary of as fork failure often = instant death!
