Apparently Laurent Jalabert made some sarcastic comment on French tv about how convenient it is that Froome always has mechanicals at the foot of climbs...

Has anyone specified what the mechanical problem was. It didn't look right, but then what would be the advantage of faking a mechanical and then rinsing your team mates?

I think it was a puncture. (or a popped spoke it seems)

The advantages I can imagine are either trying to force the peloton to stop for you to slow down the climb, or getting a bike with a motor (or in this case, I guess it would be one of those fancy wheels with motors).

There is no advantage at all, particularly at that point, when the race was on and AG2M were drilling it at the front.
