    No, but the outer races do. If both the inner and outer races of side-by-side bearings are locked together, it's impossible to adjust the axial offset to take up the clearances. This may not be a problem if the bearings are loaded in a purely radial direction, but that depends on having two other bearings in the hub which are dealing with the axial loads.

    There are 2 other bearings in the hub:

    (Basically this hub with a shorter freehub body)

    They take care of axial loads? and it could work?

    edit: never mind, I took another look at the freehub driver and there is no spacer between the bearings! Its just the bevel edge that fooled me. So it is already in side-by-side configuration...

  • May as well go Rapha now if you're considering it. It'll save you buying something cheaper, less nice looking and ok, then relegating it to the wardrobe because you actually wanted the Rapha one all along.

    (there's loads of decent stuff that's cheaper. Dhb is very decent generally, certainly more than adequate)

  • Overshoes are great when it's pisswet/cold. I can keep going a lot longer in shit weather if my feet are warm and dry.

    The kit you'll need will depend on how warm you tend to run. I spend most of summer sweating and most of winter at a reasonable temperature.

    One thing I wish I'd bought earlier was a Lusso Repel Corsa jersey and repel armwarmers. Bit pricey new, but picked them up cheaper from ebay. Windproof and waterproof/resistant but not boil in the bag. That jersey with a short sleeve base layer and the armwarmers sorted me out even in sleet/snow last winter.

    Oh, and a buff/neckwarmer makes a huge difference. Great for the first chilly mile or two, then easy to whip off and shove in a pocket once you warm up.

    Good warm gloves are also a must.

    For the really super-cold days, I ended up getting a Lusso Aero+ winter jacket. Not stylish like Rapha, and RRP is pretty pricey but it's amazing. Completely stops all windchill, not plastic, not boil in the bag. Was only useful for me for 0°c and lower, but a proper lifesaver on those freezing cold days.

    You may have gathered that I like Lusso kit.
    It's not particularly stylish (in fact, some of their stuff looks awful) but their kit is made in Manchester, very functional and great quality and their repair service has been awesome when I've had to use it.

  • Winter boots. Well worth the investment.

  • I've used an Altura Nightvision jacket I got in a sale for 18months (two winters). It performed flawlessly.

    Winter boots useful, waterproofing and insulating feet is essential and it'll save faffing with overshoes (although that's exactly what I did due to budget - PX Agu for £8).

    Some deep winter gloves (crab claw) as well as medium-weight waterproof gloves for when it's a bit milder.

    One area I wouldn't scrimp as much is winter bib tights. Using them daily means fit and comfort is important as is actually being warm and water-resistant-ish. I'm not talking rapha or assos necessarily, just not bargain bin stuff.

    Merino buff - essential for ears and covering face when it gets subzero.

    Be aware that for bib tights and base layers you'll need to double-up as it's not always feasible to wash and dry them every single day. And putting on wet stuff before you even leave the house is always demoralising.

    Top cap nut isn't coming free from expander. The silver (retaining)? Spacer is slipping down the steerer tube and not sitting where to supposed to. Help. Help what do I do?

  • Put it back together again properly. The tapered nut at the bottom of the threaded bolt should be on the other way round, with the silver spacer sitting between the two tapers.

  • I'd also suggest getting a new top cap, as that one looks like it has quite a serious crack in it.

  • Bloody hell, the kit you lot are telling @jackc to buy for commuting!

    Just get some gloves, consider some good rainwear, and a get cheap merino base layer and a winter hat for when it does actually get properly cold. Fuck all that spandex shit, save buying that for when you're racing.

  • Yeah I just use my normal baggy swrve shorts + merino long-johns, maybe an extra top under my non-cycling waterproof and a buff, with some planet x gloves. Mudguards make life happier.

  • Is the commute 2 miles or 20? Kind of makes a difference. But yeah, breathable waterproof jacket, warm gloves, nice hat. Adjust to taste.
