  • Achillies problems I thought stemed from saddle height being too high or cleats to far forward.. #armchairexpert

  • Exited but terrified in equal measure. Not long to go. Last week of training this week then rest and eat And sleep and repeat and worry

  • The ibuprofen thing is definately real...my wife was nearly taken out by a burst ulcer, by using it on an empty stomach. Normally, things like this are a bit 'old wives tale', but not this.
It's easily remedied though, by simply having at least a glass of milk before popping the vitamin I .

  • Also, the start, Davenant school, is my old senior school! Blimey....that's made me have cold sweats :0)

  • Yes, that's your Achilles. Overuse injuries are common with it on long stuff.
It's why I moved to midfoot. The general fix is to move cleats back so your foot is moved forward and you 'ankle' less. Ibuprofen is evil. I'm no longer touching that shit.
Definitely speak to Scherrit for options. Mean time, rest it up.

  • Position can be fine, but if you move any tendon enough it can get aggravated. Positional changes that reduce the movement delay or stop it happening.

  • Bit late to the thread but I entered with a guaranteed place. I have a 2.30pm start time. Not done as many miles this year than in previous years (London Marathon kind of got in the way) but done a few 200+ rides and did 425km this weekend (301 Saturday and 124 Sunday both with 6amish starts). Kit is all sorted. It's gonna hurt lots I think but I'm OK with completing the event. I have a plan but expecting it to go to pot pretty quickly! Getting a little nervous with three weeks to go!!

  • Who's that?

according to the 2013 thread it would appear to be @judenonesuch ..

  • What do people use instead of ibuprofin? I always use it on long rides :/

  • If there's some pain not going away I put some Voltaren at the next control. But usually it sorts itself out. If the pain is on the front of the ankle, tightening up my shoelaces a bit usually solves it.

  • when you guys are talking about ibuprofen being evil are you specifically talking about during endurance exercise? Whats the background?

I generally prefer it for my normal ailments as its anti inflammatory. Are you saying that it, as opposed to other painkillers is risky because of likelihood of ulcerating? More so than asparin?

"Always take ibuprofen tablets and capsules with food or a drink of milk to reduce the chance of an upset tummy. Don't take it on an empty stomach."

    'Upset tummy' means

    http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/cancer-in-general/treatment/cancer-drugs/drugs/ibuprofen

"Taking it on an empty stomach can irritate the stomach lining and might cause bleeding."

There's some stuff online about people nearly bleeding to death because of taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach, but I don't know how statistically significant the risk really is.

  • I'm now 'cream based' (lol) for my pain releif.

WIll wait to see what Scherrit says ,don't think I have time to go mid foot before LEL!

  • Always? Somethings wrong if you always need it.

Paracetamol, so long as you don't OD on it seems to fuck with less other things in your body.

  • It's bad for a number of reasons. Fucks with your guts and there was a big Danish(?) study that showed some link between NSAIDs and stroke or heart attacks or something that's err, like bad and shit.

    http://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/fda-strengthens-warning-that-nsaids-increase-heart-attack-and-stroke-risk-201507138138

Also might contribute to edema, which a certain totally awesome fucking legend cyclist recently experienced for the first time:

  • I will take a tube of Voltaren but only use it if my tendons get bad.
I won't be taking any ibuprofen pills any more, just paracetamol.

  • My wife had been having a lot of migraine due to preparing her school reports (she owns a small pre-school) and had been popping ibuprofen constantly all day and through the night....cut a long story short, a pal of mine was on duty at the ambulance station and saved her....she had to have five units of blood in resus when she got to the hospital. As I said though, just drink milk before and don't exceed the stated dose.
Normally, I don't pay attention to instructions, but I do with that shit!

  • Scherrit has suggested 'suggestion of mid foot' do will do a few little rides and see how that goes....

  • Do you Speedplay?

I've got some cleat extender plates you're welcome to try: not full mid-foot, but it saves drilling your shoes.

  • I do, but am MTB SPD on long distance as I fall over a lot wearing the speed plays.

Complimenting me on my rear end, lending me shoe (things), I'm blushing right now....

  • Quite often, just a bad habit, trying to mask pains which are probably fit related.

I really need to drop the cash on a fit with Scheritt after wasting money on a crap fit this year, but I'm planning on changing my frame so don't want to throw money at it this side of LEL as I'm ok on the bike generally, but I definitely need a decent fit on anything I buy next.

  • No-one better than Scherrit as far as I'm concerned. Probably work with him 3 times a month, never had a customer return because of fit.

  • Get over yourself.

The aero cleats are much better for walking in (as well as protecting the cleat itself and being, liek aero): I've got some I'm not using.

  • I don't mean to come across as patronising, but when it comes to all medicines, paying attention to the instructions and the cautionary and advisory labels is really important.

I hope that your wife is ok.

  • I know a few people that have gone to him and been very happy, I decided to go cheaper, but the old phrase of buy cheap, buy twice definitely fits in this instance.
