There's a small scale pro scene around Italian Gran Fondos, as winning them gets enough publicity to be paid to ride them. It's the last refuge of the scoundrel generally, it's where disgraced pros end up, like Raimondo Rumsas, Tour de France podium finisher and convicted drug cheat.
The front group is seriously fast, augmented by the Italian Mamils who dope to the gills to finish in the top 500.
The start is something to behold, a peloton of thousands going at warp speed to the foot of the first climb. All on closed roads. It's fucking ace.
