Perhaps best seen as a race for those at the front, as it's head to head and medals for first past the post, and a sportive at the back for those for whom the challenge is to just finish. Thus, as I said, not dissimilar to say a local running marathon or half marathon. I'm talking about GFs in general, not specifically this one.
Devil's advocate here, but as I understand it, Gran Fondos are races. Mass participation, mass start, everyone head to head, point to point. Fast at the front, much slower at the back. Not dissimilar to your local half marathon or something. Tend to be won by ex pros. I'm not defending the guy on anything else though.
