  • One of the biggest issues with routing in Germany generally using heatmap - so many trails and hard to tell what's paved and what isn't!

Same. Wish strava would split road/mtb types instead of just cycle/running.

On that topic, I threw this together following @skinny's prompting on twitter. Layer ridewithgps/gpx routes over strava heatmap: https://routecheck.cc/

(probably needs a recent browser, tested in chrome & safari)

  • Presumably there would be descrepencies making it hard. Gravel etc?

That looks good I'll try that out later

  • OSM sometimes has roadsurface data. You need to view it on the OSM website and query the map data itself but it can be quite useful.

  • Is there away to search the heat map? I tried adding my own coordinates to the URL but no dice.

  • Strava? No.

The one above you can add you're route, via rwgps.

  • Yeah no search. It's just OSM + Strava heat layer + route. Only optional parameter is a rwgps route id. You can zoom way out and pan though. Loading a route will jump to that bounding box.

Just added streetview images on click (where available)

  • Can you put together something that takes someone's route from trackleaders, converts it into a gpx file and emails it to, say, firsthippy.at.gmail.com?

  • This.

I've been looking at RWGPS for an hour now and have done nothing.

This sucks. I'm going to ride TABR again instead.

  • "Sorry, there was an error, please try plotting the point again"

    throws computer through wall

  • Rwgps was hard enough and they have an actual api. Low effort app but hope it's useful to someone.. I've just gone over some of my planned routes and outed some long gravel stretches I hadn't reckoned on. Just added 'g' hotkey to toggle the gpx route on/off.

  • You've probably mostly seen this but some may find it useful.

  • You don't have to ride there if you don't like it.

  • RWGPS routing error in December last year.

  • Got a puncture as well.

  • I love Germany. Such a beautiful place. Brutal too. In 2014 I came up the d500 and through the black Forest, as dawn was breaking.

  • That's more rideable than some of the shit it put me on last year.

  • Would you add 60k to avoid 2000m climbing? I'm thinking no, because it's not big mountains it's just elevation gain on the 'flat'.

  • What's the options? Dm.
But no I wouldn't. It would be slower the 60k extra way. By maybe 1h-1h30.

  • [No, even I wouldn't do that. Even if it's 6km at 10%, I'd still do that in less than an hour. 60km would take nearer 3]

Edit, got my maths wrong there!
It would be 20 km at 10%. That means it could be marginal.

Edit 2 - just looked back at my route options from last year to compare:

    • 20km to save 1000m+ via Loire valley in France
    • 135km to save 3235m in Italy.

Sounds like it is better value than going into Italy was last year, but not quite as good as the Loire valley. On that basis, I'd say it was worth considering (depends on other stuff like road quality nature of climbing, etc).

  • 3914k with 36119m according to RWGPS.

Not inspected anything yet though except for a route through a capital city which went over a bridge... that doesn't exist.

So, bodes well for my route.

Cock it, I'm going to the pub.

  • I've got another one 82k extra to save 2000m. Not sure I can be fucked with these alternatives. Probably save more time inspecting this route for stuff like the missing river crossing!

  • Less distance and elevation than me.

Looks like I'm back to the drawing board!!
