Nice . Good video as well. I think you had a speed in mind at one point - did you manage to get a run with a speedo on?

So that was run down at Hove Lagoon.
Quite good for retrieval (flipped it and it just floated to side with onshore breeze) however, not good for speed runs as many choppy waves.
So, I have cased out the Thorpe RC boat club and should try and see what it can do there.
The motor has so much punch even on 3s that I couldn't max the throttle in Hove.
There is definitely torque twist when it gets onto the plane so I have to gradually introduce the power otherwise it will just flip straight away...
Video credits to my brethren. B^)

Thorpe RC boat club
That's actually close enough to me to make building on of these things and having somewhere to float it a possibility...

You can't just turn up and run (as I found out) but they are taking new members.
http://elmbridgemc.net/index.php
Membership is about £50 a year but with a sting of a £90 registration fee. (However u can pay in instalments)
Looks like they have some serious events but a mix of recreational / competitive enthusiasts.

Amazing what brushless can do against IC now.

Their website is blocked at work, but I'll check it out later.
I fear it might be a bit serious for me:) I've never made a boat before, and were I to have a go I'd make an inappropriately powerful / fast one. I could probably do without boat anoraks watching me smash it into a rock or something... -

I'm kind of in the same 'boat' :OP
Not sure I will run it enough through the year to warrant membership either.
I still want to see if it will reach hyperspace tho...

Did it come out of the water in one piece?!
-

Kinda... 😎

One piece came one, one sunk? :)

Ha. No.
More of an over heating issue.
Reared it's head before. Basically the solder is melting on the batt and motor connectors which suggests the current is too high.
But the ESC is easily rated for the batt and motor.
I ran it for a good twenty mins mind.
Was testing some turn fin / trim tabs that I fitted at the rear to keep nose down. (U can see them on transom)
But I think they just dragged the hull on one side possibly adding to issue.
Fun and games.

Better shot of trim tabs. I think the built in turn fins are creating hydrodynamic downforce? (I have no idea what Im saying) which is pulling boat down on one side under torque....

I don't really understand that, but are you suggesting that the torque from the motor pulls it one way? like if the motor turned the other way, it would pull in the opposite direction?
Does the rudder being offset, and the drag from the water cooling intake (is that the clear pipe on the rudder?) affect the steering differently at different speeds?
Such Physics, cars are easier :)

Had a go wid my brushless C9 last weekend. I got bored in about 3 mins. Power boats r fukin cool. 😎

Maybe asymmetric drag from the rudder assembly.
Guessing it's pulling left all the time?

I think that's what he's saying. It's a thing. My granddad worked on Hawker Tempests and Typhoons during WW2. He told me once that such was the torque they had issues stopping them flipping over on throttle up.

Yes to all of the above. Basically without the turn fins it stays pretty level but I think the torque creates downforce on the right turn fin (Bit like an elevator) as the screw is going anticlockwise. 😬👌

Sounds like you need a second motor turning the other way...

• #297
Ha. That could work. 😎

Thanks for the thread dredge. Brought back many memories. I always wanted the Sand Scorcher or The Ranger. Had to stop myself from buying a Sand Scorcher reissue just now

Boat's looking good! Did it survive?
@mellion Here's a picture of my sandscorcher from a few pages back:

It definitely doesn't look so nice anymore mind. It's pretty fun in London parks - you can often get a few kids and dogs chasing you around the place.
