I think you've missed the point too.
When the guys doing the stabbing have been gunned down by armed police, it could be quite easy to say afterwards, if you were so inclined, "I fought them tooth and nail but eventually they over-powered me and I took a few stabs before they cleared off and left me for dead", when actually the true events could have been that the bloke was watching a game in the pub necking pints, there was a commotion, he was sitting one minute, next minute he's on the floor with a bunch of stab wounds.
I'm not saying that's what happened, but I think that's what @Markyboy is suggesting.
