  • They did try to increase provision a few years ago and IIRC added one of those capacious carriages you get on the trains from Ipswich. It was apparently quite difficult to do logistically (something about the fragmentation of the rolling stock and operational sides of railways) and wasn't very successful or appreciated, I think--can't remember details, though.

    The Class 90 loco hauled trains still have the bike/luggage/parcel compartment, they were built in the early 90's when the trains were still considered a service. There are about 2 or 3 an hour on a normal timetable and make up a fixed carriage stock. To rearrange them requires yards and shunters and workers that barely exist anymore in the rarified modern railway.

    However on Sunday they up the max per train from 4 bikes to 50, on selected hourly services, the problem being Ipswich is only a midway stop from Norwich to Liverpool Street, stopping to allow 50 cycles to be loaded takes time that doesnt exist in the standard timetable. Therefore the specials on Sunday have a modified timetable.
