Further to the 1x11 debate, if you want a bigger range of gears I'm running an 11 speed 11-40 shimano MTB cassette with shimano 105 GS (long cage) rear mech using a wolftooth roadlink, gives a great spread of gears. I did previously have it with a short cage ultegra mech but the GS seems to be smoother
