If the distance was roughly the same would you go through Bulgaria or would you stay west through Serbia and Macedonia?

I've only ridden Macedonia so don't know anything about Serbia or Bulgaria.

I'm staying out of Bulgaria cause I hear the drivers are really fucking bad there. This could also be true of the other two but I haven't heard much about 'em.

Kristoff went Bulgaria W-E last time though because it's meant to be fast. Not sure if that holds true N-S though. Other than that I know nothing of them.

Indeed. With no idea if it's paved or not! But bonus points to any who are brave enough.

One of the biggest issues with routing in Germany generally using heatmap - so many trails and hard to tell what's paved and what isn't!

no street maps is a pita.

I'm just going to go over and ride my route next weekend. Simples.

Would it not be easier to route for car, avoiding motorways?
