If we're going the self publishing route, maybe it will be faster if we just do an ebook? Of course, first somebody needs to come up with a better ebook format than the current ones and new ebook software to display it. Something which gives the reader a choice about whether there are footnotes, about how pages/chapters are ordered and so on. With a cracking search function that works much better than a boring old index.
