• For sure. Count me in.

  • Picked up thus frame of eBay for a fairly cheap price last week. It's a carlton flyer from somewhere between 1948-52 when they messed with lugs a bit.
It's got a modern faded two-tone sparkly blue /purple/green paint job that is OK but doesn't really suit the age in my opinion. The seat lugs/seat stays appear to have been repaired at some point, not sure how well-look a bit lumpy too me. Also there is a slight dent in top tube and the rear brake bridge a bit squashed from over tightening but that doesn't bother me too much.
I was going to decal it up and maybe built it up as us, but having seen the paint i'm less sure. I'mean now split between selling it on as is as it's a bit big as well, or stripping the paint to see what the damage is and depending on how bad it is either selling for rat use (a rather sad end for such a lovely old classic if you ask me) or doing it up, which will be pricey, and either keeping or selling depending on Mrs Jeff's opinion of me having ANOTHER bike (likely not good). Based on the photos only what do people think.
I always wanted an early flyer but not sure this is the one for me...

  • Sounds like you will never be completely happy with the frame which is a shame but if it's also to big it's got to go.

  • Thing is it'still only too big by half inch or so and frames where bigger back then. Also, I'm a bit worried I'll never find another flyer of this age I can afford, certainly not for under £100 like this one was.
At the minute I'm erring tonwards stripping the paint just to see what is under there, but then if I do try to sell it will that reduce the value? Or would you think a person interested in this type of old frame would probably want to repaint it in more period type paint scheme anyway, and so wouldn'the mind the frame being stripped..?

  • Oh, I'm up for a vintage ride/pub run as well, as long as it's in ir near enough to London for me to get too.

  • Even if the original paint work was perfect with good patina there is still the issue of the dent which would need filling and repainting.
Or just Build it up and use it as your commute for a couple of months and make your decision later, Obviously while still looking out for another/ultimate frame.
As for the ride I was thinking farningham/sidcup way maybe in August?

  • As for the ride I was thinking farningham/sidcup way maybe in August?

For sure, mid August would work great for me! Lock a date in and get the imperial tool set out!

  • That could work for me to. What are the roads like down there? Hilly or not? - helps decide what bike I bring!

  • 20th August?
Can be fairly hilly around there but we need a route that will suit the oldies. (bikes I mean)!

  • Date works for me

  • I'm going to say a tentative yes to that date, pending finding out when in august I can get my dad to come down to help with home 'improvements'...

  • Hi All

I am looking for some chromed 17/64" 25 TPI Whitworth bolts. Ideally NOS or high end repros. Any sources would be welcomed.

    Thanks

    Arb

  • In other news, been slowly working on this for a while, sourcing the odd cheap part and using other bits from the parts bin. The wheels in yhe photo are just there to give an idea of the geometry etc, I have a 26 1 1/4 constrictor conloy on blumfield fixed hub for the rear, now just looking for a suitable front wheel you match. Not sure I can keep it really due to lack off space but really liking the look of it at the minute so that's caused a few headaches...

I look forward to seeing more pics with the proper wheels...
