I think, even though they're not compatible, you can clip into Look pedals with shimano cleats. Guessing the guy has upgraded to look pedals, his existing cleats sort of work so he's including the new ones with the old pedals. Though while it might just work for him, I'm pretty sure they won't work the other way round.
