I helped build an electric car as part of one of the first Greenpower racing teams at Goodwood (school teams, basically). We used box-section steel for the chassis and bicycle wheels/brakes/gears, which was not a great combo, with the weight of child+steel+leadacid batteries it's really easy to simultaneously understeer massively at the front, balding the tyres very quickly and buckle the rear wheels, when you finally do get some lateral grip.
