I took the lid off my heap and a rat jumped out and used my chest as a springboard to leap into the hedge. I had to stand there for a few minutes to gather my thoughts.
If you put food waste, (rather than just peelings/pods/outer leaves etc), in your compost bins, you need to set them on a rat-proof base.
Mine are on top of old-style Council 50mm x 600 x 600mm paving slabs.
You don't want to lift them too many times.
