MGOOF : Modern groupset on old frame

  • That's a beauty - never liked radial spokes for some reason though.

  • Looking at a silver 105 5800 groupset for a current build, but I can't get over the looks of the 105 crankset. Any pointers towards a better looking crankset that is 105 compatible? Thanks.

  • You can throw just about any crankset into a group no problem. The chainrings aren't (usually) spaced differently like cassettes are. What look are you going for?

  • I think the 105 crank in black looks okay. But since my current project is a red/yellow steel frame, I want to use all silver rims/stem/handlebars/seatpost, so a black group would look out of place, I think. Silver seems like the way to go. Budget wise Campag Veloce and Shimano 105 are okay for me, but the cranks of both makers look rather hideous to me. I adore the more delicate look of the older campag cranks.

So I guess the question is: Is a 2004 Campag Chorus Crank compatible with a 5800 group? Yes, I know, sacrilege!

  • yeah haha 2004 chorus would likely work but deserves to be with other campy parts. if you've got one lying around why not get veloce to go with? If you're set on shimano, the old 105 and 600 cranks are similar aesthetically to chorus. sugino xd cranks would look nice as well!

  • @PhilPub @rawmeat

Thank you both for taking the time to post your thoughts and recommendations. Campagnolo peaks my curiosity, but I guess it is "the cool" of an italian company (producing in romania) that does this to me - similar to the endless apple/mac vs pc argument.
My head says I should stay with the 105 - so I'll try that route.

Returning to the crank topic: I also thought about a DuraAce 7400 crankset, but looking at the readily available new options Sugino looks alright. I already have a Sugino crank on my Pelago Stavanger running nicely with a 105, BUT there is a slight (but noticable) wobble in the large chainring... not sure if that speaks for the quality.

  • I adapted my Deull for Cardiff tri this weekend just gone. Averaged 21mph+ for the cycle section in the wet, was pretty happy. I was the only one on a steel frame as far as i could tell. 26th out of 303 overall.

  • Cool but a bit... why?

  • if that's the question you're asking then it's straight to hhsrb
    sick bike

  • If you already have a disc Venge, than why not? A perfect Sunday cafe racer I guess.

  • Haha yeah fair enough. I guess what I mean is, if you can afford to etap your spare bike, why pick a vitus? I didn't think they were particularly very good

  • Great Vitus.

  • Vitus is amazing.

@LeChef - duell looks mean too

  • on 1st pic looks like a giant spider legs. shelob teeth or sth like arachnophobic stuff.

  • Finished, almost.....

  • Wouldn't say it speaks to the quality of most sugino parts. I've ridden mostly their lower end/older stuff and it performs like a champ. Reason I might go with shimano instead is the hidden bolt on sugino cranks is a little fiddly, but I doubt you'll be changing rings out often enough for it to be a big deal.

  • This looks so mean and classic, what wheels?

  • Well, I stumbled over a slightly used Athena group on ebay and snagged that up for an ok price. Campag it is, then. Fits the theme with the italian made frame. Kinda curious - my first contact with campagnolo.

  • Ritchey Aero Road Pro. 8-10 speed hub.

  • Nice but structurals are fucked

  • I see what you did there.

  • Chortle. But seriously, looks rad.
