  • I've never popped out of an SPD unexpectedly. Plus they are FAR easier to stomp into than single-sided. And they don't wear out anywhere near as quickly etc etc etc...

  • No votes for Speedplay?

  • I've been fixed on SPD-SL for a few years and pulling only mildly rad skids and never had an issue. Plenty of people ride SPD-SL on the track (including me) so definitely safe around town. But for fixed around town and in the woods time atac pip them as everyone else says. Better engagement than shimano and I agree crank bros wear out v quickly.

  • Expensive and stupid for walking on. Road bikes or track it makes sense. Not in the city

  • Look S-Tracks are beasts, always a good strong connection with them.

  • My votes Eggbeaters v3. I've had a pair or over 2 years now never have unclipping issues, never serviced them and they run smooth as butter and if you get the premium cleats that cost as much as Time Atac cleats they last for ages.

  • I used Eggs on my CX bike last season and for that purpose I think they are pretty much perfect once you're used to the feel. With that being said I find that amount of float a bit disconcerting while riding fixed now due to the regularity of backpressure to slow down.

Something I also noticed was trying a different technique. I usually pull the leading foot up a lot and I was really trying to lock the trailing leg out this morning in the way to work, and found that helped (no popping out).

  • Yep, S-Tracks are smaller, lighter, better looking, and cost less than ATACs, they hold better when clipped in, they give a bit more float, and the cleats are way harder wearing.

    I've never tried egg beaters.

  • Reviews of them are mixed though. Any issues getting out of them?

+1. @Stroller if you've never tried a different set of pedals I suspect your pedals.

  • I always popped out of SPDs when fixed. Time Atacs. Done.

Were you using multi or single-release SPD cleats? Single-release are probably better for a fixxie skidder.

  • Single. I say always, they didn't at first and I rode brakeless in my youf (couple years ago)
They just got progressively worse when the cleats weren't even that worn. M540s were slightly better than the m520 though that might be coincidental since they're basically the same thing.

  • No, they release as they should, but not by accident.

  • I've never accidentally unclipped from any form of clueless pedal.

I tried Atacs for a while (for the hipster points) but I always felt like my foot was rolling off the end of the pedal.

Super stiff mtb race shoes made it better but in the likes of a Giro Chamber it felt horrible.

TLDR: I think it's a personal thing and much like saddles, what works for one person may not work for you.

  • I didn't know there were different types. Did I get lucky with the ones I bought?

Just got boggo M520 on one bike and M540 on the other, both in good condition with the springs cranked up because I don't like too much float.
