Best Clipless pedals for fixed?

  • Evening all,

Quick question: What clipless pedals are best for riding fixed?

Situation: I ride with a front brake but do like to indulge in the occasional skid, but find that my leading foot (pulling up) pops out of the clip sometimes. I've had this using both new and used cleats, and it might be old pedals but am I missing something? I've also used Crankbrothers before and didn't have that issue, although I only used CBs when I was learning to ride fixed before going back to SPDs. The pedals are set pretty tight, with not a lot of float.

Is it a case of replacing the pedals with new SPDs or is there a better option?

  • I always popped out of SPDs when fixed. Time Atacs. Done.

  • Oh right, I knew people used them but never tried myself. Standard MTB two bolt cleat?

  • Yep time atacs all the way

  • Time atacs as endorsed by others on this thread.

  • Gonna chip in for shimano, never unclipped in 'full aggy' mode on full tightness. Spd that is, not spd-sl.

  • That's interesting...I'd rather avoid buying another set of pedals as I like to interchange shoes between the bikes and I have SPDs on the big Enduro bike too.

Might just try ratcheting it right down and see.

  • give it a go! I've unclipped from old pedals though, springs must go over time.

  • Stacks up, this pair are a good few years old and must have coming on 10,000 miles on them.

  • I wouldn't choose cleats on the basis of skids alone. You can skid without cleats or straps if you try.

  • many people like look stracks and I just happen to have a pair for sale

  • I've tried SPDs, SPD-SLs (do not use these fixed please), straps, cages and platforms and finally settled on Egg Beaters as the best all-rounder for riding fixed. You can clip in from any direction (any side of pedal, toe first / heel first / just mash your foot down hard), I haven't had a single unexpected un-clipping in the 3 years I've been riding them fixed and you can use them with most SPD shoes.

  • and you can use them with most SPD shoes.

Having said that, I had to carve a channel in the rubber pads on the soles of my Giro Republics to make room for the pedals' axels.

  • I have never had to carve shoes up to make them work with time atacs

  • Have you had a crash or taken a tumble while using the atacs? Do your feet just pop out of them?

  • Yes, they just pop out. - apart from a couple of times mountain biking when I have stalled going up a steep bank and rolled back on myself and ended up like an inverted tortoise with my legs and hands in the air still attached to my bike.

  • I'm going to go against the grain here and recommend Time Atacs.

I used to use Eggbeaters ahh hahaha what a fuckwit I was.

  • I used to use Eggbeaters ahh hahaha what a fuckwit I was.

How so? Seems like pretty strong words over someone's choice of pedals?

  • They disengage ridiculously easily, the cleats wear out and become unusuable in about five minutes and the pedals fall apart five minutes later.

I have a video of me crashing due to unexpected disengagement, but no video of me falling off another time due to putting my foot down and discovering my pedal still attached to my foot but not my bike.

Tldr crank brothers pedals are shit

  • why not SPD-SLs for fixed, are you more likely to pop out with them?

  • I use LOOK on both my fixed bikes, quite happy with them.

  • Apart from them being single sided, so a little to get into initially, there's no reason not to use them. You soon get used to it. Majority of my fixed riding was in SPD-SL.

  • SPD-SLs (do not use these fixed please)

    Why's that?

  • I just like to be able to clip-in without worrying about the pedal's orientation. They're fine if you're not un-clipping at intersections, but my old commute took me down Embankment and it didn't feel safe setting off in heavy traffic sometimes.

Having said that, I ride SPD-SL on my road bikes and prefer them in pretty much every other way.

  • I haven't had any of the issues with Egg Beaters (v2, with Premium cleats) you mentioned, Jezston. I guess YMMV ¯_(ツ)_/¯
