I thought the final lap cut that section out, but maybe I'm getting confused with the 50...?
The national variation starts at the chawton roundabout and finishes just before it, which given the prevailing wind is from the west means the last 10 miles will be into a nice headwind!

Always been 5 laps, Chawton! Arrrghh!!!!

I don't know why I bother trying to remember anything, I'm clearly shit at it, it's definitely a different and start point to when I last did it, I looked that up....

Does being fat count as 'non aero'?

I love that everyone on rtf is claiming that the aerohead has amazing field of view, I fear this may just be pushing that claim a bit far, I wonder what @skinny thinks of this position...?
Love that in the same situation the ladies winner is up covering the brakes, perhaps he is blissfully unaware of a imminent crash...?

Yeah, I've seen a lot of pics of winners riding in a head down position recently... After all the kerfuffle over the 3cm rule, I find it hard to understand why no-one seems to give a toss about head down riding.

It's the same person/team a lot of the time!
Although in fairness looking closer at that picture he also has a hand off the bars and is taking a drink but there are too many pictures of these guys doing this to be a coincidence.
The problem is that people copy what the fast guys do, and with the CTT doing nothing about it, it's only a matter of time before there are going tonbeba load of crashes..

He could just be wiping his nose for a second.

I wasn't going to mention that :-) Of course, one photo from one event could just be an accident of timing, but when multiple shots all show the same/similar head position it begins to look a bit silly.

There may be loads of people doing it and it is dangerous, but I don't think using this as an example is helpful. He is clearly in the process of doing something like which explains it. You could argue it's dangerous to ride one handed.
They should put random numbers up on a sign at some point on the course and every rider has to whisper it to the person by the sign in sheet. I would definitely forget it!

I'd let Bingham off there. I've never seen a photo of him with his head down before, always up. Plus I think he'd drinking from his camekbak.
There are photos of my with my head down, stretching my neck muscles. But yeah people in those giros seem to be the main culprits.

• #16014
Do these count? I know I certainly spend too much time in races with my head slumped down (with tail up in the air), but I wouldn't say I've ever not been aware of what's going on on the road.

I didn't mention Dan because I think there are lots of guilty people (I've seen an increasing number of head down photos from our club tts)... but...

Just make everyone wear the same helmets, like those Spuik one's from the 2000s. That'll stop people looking down, as they'll act like a massive air brake!
-
• #16017
I reckon he can see from that head position. I know I've a similar head position but my helmet doesn't sit like that.
I'm on my phone do can't post a photo. -

Yeah no seeing ahead from that.
It is always the giro though. It must test really fast like that.

I think your comment about riding your bike alot as training for long TT's is way more "fun" than turbo work normally. As I need to pull my finger out for the 24hr next month I did the coast to coast on my commutor bike with loaded panniers then rode home the next day. The thing is I am not sure spending time on the turbo is more hateful. I had to ride through so much featureless fens it was not funny. Linconshire is way to long and the wind died away just when I needed it most.
The one thing I am trying to work out about the 24 is what to do about eating at night. When riding back from up north the last food and drink I had was at 8:30pm. A cold coke, coffee and a muffin. After that a few sips of water. I simply could not eat more. Got in a 1 am but I know I could have ridden for maybe another 1hr tops before falling over. If I had eaten I would have hurled so I didn't. How do I get round this for the 24hr. Take a nap and hope I can stomach breakfast after an hour. This could be my undoing.
I will do the dunwich dynamo to see what eating and riding at night feels like. On sunday I ate mostly food, pasta, burger King, Bacon Bap lots of coffee and I think the coffee was the problem. Maybe less coffee and I would be able to eat later into the night. Not sure.

Liquid diet for the race. (Mostly)
Malto/fructose drinks. And pad it with something else if need some solid. You need to get used to eating, so you just kind of have to and your body will adjust.

The one thing I am trying to work out about the 24 is what to do about eating at night.
I did the 24 last year unsupported Audax style. No carb drinks and feeding myself from the cafe, petrol station and chippy at Prees Island plus a few sausage sandwiches from the Hodnet support point.
From the chippy I bought a pie and chips, ate some sat down at the unsupported riders tent, bunged some chips in a food bag, stashed the rest in the unsupported riders tent, and went off on the Hodnet loop. I'd munch a bit whilst riding and then come back to the tent for a bit more. Lather, rinse, repeat.
It's not the greatest strategy, and my stomach did shutdown in the early hours of the morning requiring me to have a 90 minute nap to try and fix so it certainly cost me lots of time (I was stopped for just over 4 hours compared to an aspiration of just 90 minutes) and probably ~50 miles. The main problem was the lack of miles in the build up (I'd done just 58h of riding in the 7 months of 2016 before the 24) and so my fat metabolism wasn't in top form.
If/when I do another 24 I'll train on carb drinks and aim for closer to 400 miles with about an hour stopped (I'll still ride unsupported so I need time to nip into the tent at Prees to faff with bottles).

Carb drinks sort of work for me but I cant drink them for 12 hrs let alone 24. I had carb drinks on the newbury 12hr. after about 7 hrs all I could drink was plain water.
Fortunatley I have done 10,000km this year and plenty of long rides so my fat burning is as good as it has ever been. I think I will just have to sleep a bit wake up and have breakfast.
I will be stopping to eat pasta, timpana (which is pasta in pastry case), espresso, rice pudding, cake..... I find it difficult to eat and ride at the same time. My target is 400 miles but really I just want to finish without hurling.
I suppose I am not used to a liquid diet. Maybe Guniness would work. thats food. could get a little pissed though.

Are there any rules about not drinking alcohol? Or would they just assume no one would do it anyway?
-
• #16024
Internationally it's not considered a banned substance in-competition by WADA.
You might be charged criminally for riding under the influence though.

Fuuuuck, killed a spoke in my Jet 6, right before my fast BAR 50 on Sunday (and Nat 100).
Anyone got a vaguely aero wheel I could borrow for a week if I can't get this fixed?
Thanks, was a mild shock as all the talk before was that weather wasn't ideal but it seemed ok to me!
There are limited events left on f11/10 this year, and I know I need a fast (cheat) course to break 20, so guess I've got a choice of the v718, p881r on a good day or the one event left on the f11/10 this year so may be in my interests to make the pilgrimage pop north.
