• I added another layer of rim tape, so it goes up the inside wall on both sides, an extra 20ml of sealant, shook it so that the sealant should be covering the area where the air is escaping, and left it at a jaunty angle to keep the sealant there for 5hrs. Still a minute amount of air escaping, ~5PSI over 5 hours, so I'll flip it, do the same on the other side and see what happens then.

  • had a rather alarming blowout whilst riding this morning! :s

luckily stayed upright and no real harm looks to be done. bead on one side blew completely off the rim.

any idea why it might have happened? i'm worried you're all (obviously) going to tell me its because my tyres arent tubeless compatible!

    wheel specs:
    Ryde Trace Trail 25
    Panaracer Pasela 27.5x1.75"
and i had them pumped out to 40psi

  • Er, this

any idea why it might have happened? i'm worried you're all (obviously) going to tell me its because my tyres arent tubeless compatible!

  • but lots of people on the internet seem to have done it! :(

  • And lots of people jump red lights, have unprotected sex, run across roads etc etc

  • loose valve. the same thing happened to me on saturday during the coast to coast ride.

  • I use the worms with flexible superglue. I have done a video on the website where I stuff a screwdriver (with a fair shaft) through a tyre and bingo it is fixed quickly. Worms by themselves can fail at higher pressures. Glue by itself is often effective. The two together can seal a big hole at high pressure.

  • What would you say is high pressure? I'd nominate the lower pressures that you can run tubeless at (in comparison to tubed clinchers) as one of their advantages.

  • 80 psi is higher pressure. I run my 28mm IRC's on the commutor bike at 70 psi rear 60 psi front. I do run the roadlites on my race bike at 90 psi though.

80 psi with a worm alone can cause it to come unstuck.

  • First go at the tubeless thing, everything worked perfectly! I mean how/why!? WTB cross boss, Stan's grail, stans tape and valves and efetto mariposa sealant. Tyre went on without issue (used tyre levers) then the beads locked on in first go with a shitty floor pump. It is going to explode on 1st ride isn't it?

Made me rethink my position on road wheels which need new tyres and have tubeless rims ..

One question, should I have to over inflate the tyre first time round to hear the beads locking in? If so by how much? Is 35/40ml sealant fine in these?

  • I just pump them harder than I usually will until I'm sure they are well seated. About 40 psi for something like the cross boss... Great tires, tough they were a nightmare to seat for me, in WTB rims

  • Be aware that tyres don't always make the sound either. Visual check to make sure the tyre is seated evenly is enough too, there's usually a line just above the rim.

  • got up this morning and checked pressure, rear one held at exact same front one lost 30psi .. when I did inject sealant there were 2 tiny holes on the sidewall that got filled in .. I am going to write an angry email to CRC just in case.

  • Just riding them with some sealant in is the answer to 99% of 'OMG it lost air over night' problems

  • I had a similar pleasurable experience with my Grail/Schwalbe Pro One. Happily surprised that a track pump was enough to get the air in (I think the tight fit of the tyre helped somewhat). With regards to the locking in, did you lubricate the tyre with soapy water, as I suspect it helps the tyre snap into the beads, but as @Jon says, as long as the tyre appears to be consistently seated around the rim, you should be good to go. I've got 30ml in mine, but 40ml is perfectly acceptable too.

  • yeah thats what I thought, I will maintain the pressure till I finish the build and can ride and email CRC anyway

  • did you lubricate the tyre with soapy water

yep, only ever heard 1 pop, the front one there were 3 at least.
It seems well seated even when I deflated it 100%.

  • Given the positive experience .. HED Ardennes rim brake road bike .. going to alps on 12th for 10 days. Do I go tubeless? In need of a new tyres before the trip.

I am looking at Schwalbe Pro one and Hutchinson Fusion 5 Galactik in 25mm.

  • I think I only had the 1 pop on the second inflation (after having put in the sealant), nothing to worry about.

  • Go tubeless

You can always take an inner tube with you just in case.

  • Do I go tubulars?

    Yesssssss

  • I also have that choice ..

  • but rim brake tubeless descending on alloy rims is fine? 65kg atm.

  • If you put a bit of chain lube on the valve core it stops the sealent going off in he valve and causing problems later.
