  • Can you just buy and replace?

  • Much expense. I do, of course, need to sell the Volvo - but as and when that happens I'll need to check that the 6.3 litre engine has an engine number above 156983 60 060658, which is when they changed the bolt type.

  • Not that I would ever waste the money on a new car lease/pcp/whatever,
    the mfgv is surely based upon a lot of negotiation when you hand it back,
    not just any mileage overrun, but all those car park wounds that have been covered up by the 'Scrapes'n'dents' guys you can find on many industrial estates.
    I imagine it even worse than the process of handing back a rental car.

    Any electric car will have a full record of every enthusiastic acceleration, every needless overtake, every bit of accelerate/brake along a road with sequenced lights. This might show up in a slightly reduced service interval in an ice-based vehicle,
    but
    electric (assisted) vehicles have the record of how the battery has been aged by use.
    I would expect thrashed vehicles to fall far beneath their mgfv as the replacement battery pack will be charged to the 'enthusiastic' user.

  • Well, I've signed up for a new car on PCP. Ask me how it worked out in 4 years.

    Obviously it won't be the cheapest way to own a car, but it should be low hassle.

    To be fair to the sales guy, he was at pains to point out that in 4 years I will essentially be in a position of not owning anything, as opposed to now where I own an 8 year old Passat.

    I had managed to work that out already, but apparently a lot of people are attracted by the low headline figure of PCP without working out what they will do at the end of it.

    Nah. It's miles better. There is a very specific code of conduct from the trade association and detailed guidelines to what's wear and tear and what's damage. It's not a concern at all.

    Whether £700 a month is a reasonable sum to drop on a rental only Dammit can decide.

    You can lease a new Passat for about £260 a month. My mate just spent £1800 getting his 2009 Passat through the MoT. Add £1000 for depreciation and that's £233 a month. Add in the free breakdown cover and better mpg of a new car and it looks like a no brainer.

  • Finally made a start putting my engine back together. Had to sort the new rockers and measure for new pushrods, which meant a 2hr round trip drive on Saturday to buy a set of 12" vernier calipers and making an adjustable pushrod. Both accomplished on saturday with full on manflu.
    Mild improvement in my condition had all the measuring done and the lot bolted back together. Pic of the new Harland Sharp roller rockers here....

    Incidentally, there are like 18, black oxide ARP bolts holding the head on. A set of the fasteners alone costs $90! Them's some big bangs....

  • Yes, that's similar to my workings. The monthly payment is an overhead. 2 years servicing and 4 years warranty included so additional costs should be limited.

  • Our VW Up!!! is £108 a month (39 rentals of £99 for 3 years) for 10,000 miles a year. You'd be lucky to successfully run an old shitter on that budget.

    And the Up!!!!!! has a bloody Dr Dre radio for listening to Ed Shearing.

    Leasing / PCP makes total sense unless you're happy to run an 8 year old car and are lucky on repair bills.

    It was not a sexy experience.

    As I pointed out a while ago my 18 year old "cheap" 911 has cost more (or at least had a couple of months ago) than a brand new one would have done, if I'd leased it.

    That said it's mine, now, and I shouldn't have to spend any more cash on it - I am going to, but that's because I want to.

    In terms of the Volvo replacement I genuinely don't know what I want. Hence the vacillating. However, whilst 700 or so quid is well within the realms of affordability it does seem somewhat profligate to burn through that sort of money to drive 3,000 miles per year.

    That's £2.80 per mile, which is almost certainly more expensive than just Ubering everywhere, albeit less sexist.

  • Haha - so close you can almost smell the burnt rubber. Chances are fairly good I've fucked up the measurements and will get the pushrods cut the wrong size. Erring on the side of caution, I'll give them one last measure this evening after work....

    Really dreading putting the headers back on...it was an unbelievable c*nt to remove them. A ridiculous combination of removing plugs in a particular order while simultaneously juggling the starter motor.

    Obviously can't remember where any of the belts and pulleys go either.
