just had a nice chat with a chap who'd just retired and had this built as a retirement present. Wasn't entirely sure where to put it. The frame is beautiful and I think the components work largely, but the wheels just kind of take it in another direction! (I did suggest de-stickering them)

All that beautiful lugwork on the flying gate is at odds with the wheelset IMO. It doesn't need to be vintage but at least more traditional: Open Pros laced the Campy Records for example. I'd direct you and him over here: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/212733/
Love those flying gates: strange if you are going Brooks saddle and tape you'd go so modern looking with the rest.

I am in agreement. I think the rest of the components work in my opinion, but the wheel set needs to be shiny at least. I wish I could remember the name of the builder who made the frame for him - apparently under license (or something) from Baines? Probably the last one he'll make as he's 80+ now, apparently.
