On paper the only benefit is the weight which can easily be approached with aluminum for less $$$. Same goes for aeroz, you could easily build something faster for a fraction of the price. So I guess Hyperons are a little silly

The only holdback factor of hyperons is the price otherwise the build quality is fantastic and they're such comfortable wheels. Since you wrote:
"Shallow carbon rims are silly" I got that you were referring to all shallow carbon rims, including the ones that don't sell for crazy prices and that's what I don't understand -
I wouldn't consider weight a benefit on Hyperons as they are few grams heavier than a set of Bora Ultra 50...
Bora Ultra 35 are almost 100 grams lighter than Hyperons.As per catalog:
Bora Ultra 35 tubs - 1160 g
Bora Ultra 50 tubs - 1215 g
Hyperon Ultra 2 tubs - 1231 g
