  • So what does GCHQ do 24/7?

They monitor people who are already known, and for those that aren't, they look for stuff that's a bit more obvious than hiring a van and driving to a different city. Otherwise you'd have armed police swooping in every time someone bought a sofa off eBay.

  • So Twitter following Britain First isn't sufficient to raise an eyebrow from those tasked with protecting us?

I'm not suggesting hiring a van is of itself sufficient, it is Darren Osborne's combination of actions that should have resulted in him being pulled over.

  • Liking crap things isn't a crime.

Less flippantly - Britain First isn't a proscribed organisation. So there's not sufficient legal cause to probe into someone's life just because they follow them on twitter.

  • The last time i checked Britain First weren't a terrorist sect. Just following them on Twitter would not put you on any kind of watch list for anything. I think you are madly overestimating how all this works...

  • I'm not suggesting hiring a van is of itself sufficient, it is Darren Osborne's combination of actions that should have resulted in him being pulled over.

Chains of related events are easy to spot after the event. Beforehand, the exact same chain of events may have led to entirely different outcomes.

Post hoc reasoning is no way to run an intelligence service. Thankfully.
