  • Shame that it was fucked. They given you an ETA? Rebuild or they modifying?

  • Great news. The frame came back yesterday. Head tube corrected and rear drop out faced.

Spent the evening building. Still some bits to do. But I'm super pleased so far. Might get a bigger front chain ring. 40t looks a bit silly with 42 at the back.

  • That looks fantastic!

  • More pics!

  • looks great, what size tyre could you fit in the frame/forks

  • Really lovely. The black rims with gumwalls look so clean!

I'd be tempted to try out all black stem and post... And maybe with some compact bars you could use a longer stem?

  • +1, think these would look good

  • Apologies all, I have been meaning to keep this more up to date. It all got a little hectic in the run up to our trip! but we made it! Bristol to Paris! Pretty pleased considering I hadn't cycled the bike more than five minutes before we departed.

Here the BJ on the second day in France.

I have to admit however I ran into a few problems. On the third day, my gear indexing went locco (im guessing the cable stretched) but i never managed to get it quite behaving again. Should be easy to sort now back though. More of a concern however, on the final day, while heading into Paris my headset developed a notchiness always wanting to index into the straight on position. Im guessing I didn't do it tight enough and somethings chattered. Im no expert though, any advice welcomed.

  • @russmeyer will try get some more pics this week!

@PhilDAS those soma bars look pretty sweet! I was a little disappointed with the ones i got to be honest.

  • my headset developed a notchiness always wanting to index into the straight on position. Im guessing I didn't do it tight enough and somethings chattered.

In my experience of fucking up headsets, the notchiness is from it being too tight.

A loose headset will allow your fork to move up and down over unevenness in the road and make a metallic sound as it all clangs around. And you can feel the fork knock under braking.

  • thanks for the reply. headsets are my least favourite bit of bike maintenance, its like saucery. It feels solid when I apply the brakes and rock it back and forth, so yeah maybe too tight. will undo it all and take a look at some point this week.

  • 12 months later, i'm taking bob to Cuba next week. Moving to Chicago about 8 months ago meant I haven't been getting on as many cycle trips as I would like. But on the plus side, i've been able to commute to work each day by bike! It was a little bit nippy in the middle of January when we were hitting -20C most days!

Anyway, back to bob. In preparation for Cuba I took the opportunity to replace the stem with a Nitto Dynamic stem. I also replaced the seatpost with a Nitto Crystal Fellow. The original stem I picked was way too short, and the thomson seatpost didn't really suit the bike in my opinion. Having swapped a few bits out and re doing the cabling, I have finally got round to taking some more pictures of the bike...

  • Really nice! What’s the riding like in Cuba?

  • That’s a lovely bike. Good choice of upgrades.

  • Love this bike!

  • That's a really nice looking frame and colour choice...

  • Speaking of colour - which one is it?

  • Looks so so good

  • @Tallboy from what we have read it's apparently pretty great. reasonable quality roads, very few cars and the cars that are around are apparently are very considerate to cyclists! I will be sure to report back! The 30 degree heat might limit our daily mileage though!.

  • @multiburst it's metallic grigio with black lug lining

@everyone else, thanks for the thumbs up :)

  • Perfect, thanks! Never had thought this when looking at the BJ palette....

Can you comment on the durability of the metallic finish? Thought this was the most sensitive one....

Regarding Cuba: roads are ok (did it on 28mm), pretty hot and make sure to look at some windmap before. On the finishing 40km of one route, i was slowed down to a crawl in the lowest gear - took ages for it. Never had such strong winds before/again...

BTW: if you want a shortcut, you can also ride on the cuban autobahn, it's just a normal road, they even sell bananas on it. Culinary i'm a little spoiled through Japan, but foodwise i must commit it wasn't that great...and i won't tell you about that little sea-bugger i caught in the sea that grew a couple of days in my ear to approx 5cm, autsch...

  • Looks amazing, you are going to have fun for sure.

Which rear rack is that? I like its simplicity.

  • Tubus fly,
    lovely bike,
    visited Cuba once,
    same views as above:
    lush roads, bland food.

  • Dreeeedge........
I'm looking at one of these in pretty much the exact spec. With discs what's the tyre clearance with and without guards? The BJ website says 28mm with guards but I guessing it's larger? And in the Cuba guise you've got those challenge tyres which I'm guessing are 33mm.

  • My rim brake Audax End to End will only fit 28mm safely with 4mm each side between tyre and chainstay. I presume the disc brake version will take larger tyres looking at the pictures above.
