  • Does the election thread have some special invisibility magic? I probably first saw it on the "Today" page but now cannot see it in "Today" (despite the frequent posts), "Following" (despite having contributed to it) or the "Miscellaneous and Meaningless" area where it claims to live. Short of bookmarking a link, I can only navigate to it by going to my profile and clicking on one of my posts to the thread.

  • I can see it in 'Today'. Have you accidentally ignored M&M?

  • No. I can see other M&M things in "Today", "Following" etc.

  • Never mind. Somehow I'd ignored the election thread. Lack of sleep etc.

  • Is the forum affixing -large and maybe other stuff to images now that you're allowing bigger ones? There's been a couple of images I've downloaded today on my phone to share elsewhere and had to grab a file explorer to rename them so they're recognised.

  • a couple of images I've downloaded today on my phone to share elsewhere and had to grab a file explorer to rename them

    Which images in particular?

Possibly the extension doesn't match the mime type, try the attachment at https://www.lfgss.com/comments/13684952/ which has been deliberately misnamed as .png even though it's really a .jpg

  • Actually, looking at others I think I just hit 2 with -large on yesterday by chance.

  • The correct mimetype should be sent regardless of the file extension.

Jpgs are also auto converted to webp for clients that support webp, and yet this is done without a redirect so the file extension remains intact.

We also don't trust that something that calls itself a jpg is an image. So regardless of file extension, we want to make sure an exe isn't uploaded containing malware, so every image is inspected, and during that we may adjust the mimetype.

  • The file extension is really only there to tell some very dumb clients (dumber than curl even) that the thing it is requesting is an image.

  • Oh and the webp thing is awesome.

On the test thread where I uploaded a 30mb image, the webp is half that size.

So if you're using Chrome on your mobile you will download way less in the image heavy threads.

  • There was this from the meme thread which I must've tried to download to share over messenger for a dog loving friend after, I think, something text heavy that I downloaded from the election thread to read more easily. I think I just randomly hit two in a row and remembered there was a recent change, it's probably all greenhell's fault.

Yes, I get that lfgss.com and his browser are not thrown by the funny extension, but it looks like his phone's image viewing app failed to spot it.

  • it's probably all greenhell's fault.

    It's actually Twitter's fault

  • I'll blame greenhell.

  • I get a server error when I try to search a person's posts. For instance this is my profile, if I click search on this I get.
    Server Error
We're sorry, there was a temporary error when we tried to process your request.
The error has been logged. Please try again later.

This happens consistently whenever I search.

  • Are the pictures we uploaded to the old forum still in the database? If so, is there any chance of ever getting them out again?

  • I'm having issues with webpages crashing and reloading on my iPad mini (image heavy lfgss threads being one of the main culprits). It seems like a fairly well known issue to which the only viable, permanent solution is switching off JavaScript (restarting etc just a temp fix). This massively speeds up browsing and stops the crashes, but it seems like all the action buttons (mark as read, follow, etc) all run off JavaScript. Is there any workaround? I'm sadly assuming the answer is no...! Thank you.

  • Try now and let me know if it is fixed for you.

  • If you mean try with JavaScript off, then no, after a hard reset/cache clear I'm afraid it still doesn't work (no buttons on the right generate actions).

If you mean does the change reduce crashes with JavaScript on, then I'll test it and let you know! Thanks for trying.

    That's what I mean.

  • Did it work?

Are you able to use your iPad now?

  • Well, it's not crashed again yet! One sales thread that used to crash, I think, now just decides to not download all images at once if it looks like too much. An infinitely more preferable solution! Fingers crossed, thank you.

  • Is there a time that you're usually online?

I'd like to turn the thing I turned off... back on. To see if I really did figure out which component was causing the issue.

And I would need to verify that you do see a crash at that time.

  • Hmm, not really a nailed on time... You could switch it back on today/tomorrow and I could let you know the time that it crashes?
