The Sheldon method works, make sure the bolts are just tight enough to have some grip on the chainring and hit the chain pretty hard.
Also I'm late the conversation but for fitting grips I find lighter fluid works really well, it evaporates quickly and doesn't leave any residue so you can get the grips off again in future, with effort.

I tried, even used a rubber hammer. Maybe I screwed in the bb at an angle, lol.

The chainring seems to be seriously untrue btw. You can clearly see it when the driveside crank passes 10 o'clock and again at 7.
I tried to center it with the help of Sheldon Brown but it didn't get better than this. Weren't Zen supposed to be one of the truest chainrings? :(
