In that case are you sure it's jumping at the back and not the crank? It sounds like everything else is in order.

craporama that could be it, the inner chainring could be too worn for the new chain....

@Constable_Savage thanks for the answer - its a brand new rear mech too. chain is same as previous size, same size cassette too.... weird!
