• Got rammed by a scooter rider on my way home. Stayed upright and no damage beyond knocking my back wheel out of alignment, but it was a clear attempt to knock me off my bike. I got footage of the berk's licence plate and the whole altercation and have reported the twat through Roadsafe.

  • What is wrong with people, eh?

  • Holy shit, that's horrendous, if it was intentional surely that must be seriously pursued, glad you're alright.

I just came very close to a punch up with a driver for the first time tonight. Cycling along the two lane cycle lane on Cable street between Shadwell and Tower Bridge I was cruising along when ahead I saw a car which was approaching the cycle lane at a junction from the left, planning to turn right. Even though myself and other riders were getting close he pulled out, but failed to see a driver coming from his left who wanted to turn across the lane and down the junction he was coming from.

Anyway, the driver from the left stopped then pulled away, so I continued riding as it was my right of way being on the lane and expected the second driver to wait for the cycle traffic to pass before turning, but instead he didn't look, went on, meaning I had to take evasive action.

At this point I looked back and shouted "what are you doing" or possibly what are you fucking doing" (the distinction matters later), while he stopped, rolled down his window and started shouting abuse. I was about to cycle on, but he then jumped out of his motor and strode up towards me aggressively. By now I'd got off my steed and had it between the guy and me as he kept shouting, thinking he might swing I swung my bike around and lent it against a nearby signpost, took of my sunnies. The was guy his twenties, clearly a loud mouth, but then got right up in my face.

Now here is when I thought do I lamp him, anyone who's met me knows I'm a lover not a fighter, but with 25 years of kungfu and 10 years of ju jitsu under my belt I can handle myself and suppose in that split second I judged he was wanting to make a scene rather than actually kick off. This guy was right in my face, not just squaring up, in my face, which partly made me think he was clueless, and also by this time other cyclists had stopped. He knew he was in the wrong, but argued "I had eyes as well" and that supposedly because I thought he was a mug I thought it was ok to swear at him.

The whole time he'd been shouting his head off in my face I was saying to him it was clearly our right of way, and that's why I shouted at him, but he was just fired up. Anyway when confronted with other cyclists trying to calm him down I reckon he realised he'd been a dick, backed off and drove away.

It really saddens me, he was clearly a young Muslim guy, maybe he feels persecuted, but given the state of the world I'd have hoped he would've had the grace to back off or just apologise, instead of jumping out his car and screaming in my face. When I tried to speak he kept shouting "what you gonna do about it", and sort of trying to push into me. I'm glad I didn't react, but as a cyclist or in any other walk of life when someone threatens you like that doesn't it warrant acting first, thoughts? Peace, Kev.
