Cheapest base model has 8 GB RAM, which I was told was not enough?

Sharing more links... this macrumors post may help to figure out how much RAM one needs.
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/how-much-ram-do-i-need-in-my-macbook.1756865/
As the RAM questionnaire was done a few years ago, there is the suggestion that you should add '7' to your score to get a more accurate answer for up to date OS etc. It seems to work OK as a guide to me.

It might be enough for now, but give it a few years and apps will need even more ram. I'd go 16gb, especially as you use powerpoint a lot.
It might be the difference between a shit and a great computer

How comparable is the gruntiest i7 available in the Macbook and the entry level MBP processor?
When I looked at my Dell it has a low voltage i7, suggesting that it's not terrifically fast itself, and that does what I need it to do in terms of day to day work tasks, I've mentioned what it is in this thread but can't find it whilst posting.

I'm sold on the 16 GB of RAM btw, it's now what chassis and with what processor.
-
• #11384
16GB is worth it, even if it doesn't feel necessary now, it will be so in several years time.
Don't think new MBP's RAM can be upgraded by the user can it?

I have had "the email".
My work laptops being taken back.
I need to buy my own.
13 or 15?
I hate the 15inch size but worry the 13 will be too weak?
Will prob get an eGPU for games, but... -
• #11386
Shirley 15" is the only option? What if you bought a 13 and then the external GPU turned out to be a huge PITA? Or you're working onsite somewhere doing something that involves a lot of GPU acceleration and the thing is lagging like crazy...

Are you switching contracts? Wouldnt the next place get you a mac? Thats how I survive.
-
• #11388
I hear ya, but...
eGPU are natively supported in High Sierra. Plug and play. Job done. "It just works". Plus the GPU's in the 15's are kinda shit (well, not hat bad, but still...)
@amey not switching contracts, they are just taking their Macs back, I knew I was on borrowed time.
MELT DOWN. I don't like the size of the 15's!!!!111!!1!!

And do I need 1TB of Flash storage?
-
• #11390
How much would a maxed-out 13" plus eGPU be, roughly? Compared to a 15"
-
• #11391
Quite close... very close... but more portable (excluding eGPU) and much more powerful (including eGPU).
But DayZ relies on a powerful CPU!?
Going for a 512GB SSD to save some quids. -
• #11392
I was going to get a 13... then when the moment came, I pressed the 15 button...
-
• #11393
The 13" has a slightly faster CPU but is only dual core. 15 seems to be lower GHz but moar corez.
So, in theory, 13" is better for DayZ, providing you have the eGPU.
-
• #11394
Thats what was thinking...
Good news is a lad here has a maxed out 15 and DayZ, he's updating and we will test tomo.
Would love to spend less than 3k, thinking of sticking with 1TB as I want less clutter. -
• #11395
Just suck up the size. It's not that big and you can actually work on it. 13 is useless for anything apart from sending emails and copying stuff to hard drives.
Even plugged in to a monitor it's a pain.

I've never come close to filling mine up. Depends how big your dropbox is and if you want it all synced?

This site is pretty damn good, and this page is relevant...

I went for this in the end:
Refurbished 13.3-inch Macbook Pro (released Oct 2016)
Touchbar
3.1GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5
16 GB RAM
Retina Display - Space Grey
£1,649If I should cancel this due to it having computer AID's someone should tell me now.

touchbar? ew.

Touchbar: Meh
Touch ID: AwesomeHonestly, I'm loving the new MBP (15" Touchbar). It is SO quick. The battery is great. The form factor works when lugging it to/from contracts. Best laptop I've ever owned. Even like the keyboard.
Jeez UK is expensive for Mac... A 13" MBP non touch bar, 256 HD 16gb ram is $2519 aussie dorrah . In pounds that's less than £1500. Would that not be the ideal machine? Ignoring the 300g penalty over the mac book
